Walk-in Nothing to pick up from the front table, BUT GET ALL YOUR SUPPLIES EVERYDAY! Take out you’re your Reader’s Notebook and a blank sheet of paper in your Reading Notes section of your binder. Title the sheet of paper “Parts of a Reading Response”. Read silently until we begin.

USING TEXT EVIDENCE AND WRITING A BALANCED RESPONSE/JOURNAL

What is text evidence?

Simply put, text evidence are the parts of the text taken from the reading that help support your answer to a question or prompt.

But why do I have to use them???

Why do I have to use them? When answering questions/prompts after you have read something, a simple answer does not prove you know something. You must be able to provide text evidence to support your answer. Providing text evidence supports your opinion and strengthens your argument.

Types of Text Evidence Direct Quotes: Using an author’s language word for word (verbatim). Use quotation marks around the author’s words to avoid plagiarism. Paraphrasing: Putting an author’s ideas/what happened in the text in your own words

Look at my sample response from yesterday : The word that best described Kevin in the early chapters of Freak the Mighty was intelligent. The first time his intelligence was really seen was when he was playing in his backyard with an orinthopter that he built himself. When Max asked him about it, Kevin replied, “An orinthopter is defined as an experimental device propelled by flapping wings.” Also, the way he defined it made him sound like a human dictionary. Later in the text, he also used words like “opiate” and “sobriquet”. This shows that Kevin had an extensive vocabulary and articulated his ideas well. The average thirteen year does not know these words or use them on a regular basis. He was definitely an intelligent teen. Kevin’s intelligence is seen again when he visits Max’s “Down Under”. Max asked why Kevin refers to his mother as the Fair Gwen. Kevin then exploded into the story of King Author and the Knights of the Round Table. He knew every detail from that period in history and he didn’t leave any of them out when he explained it to Max. He mentioned that he knew all of this because he read A LOT! This also shows that Kevin is intelligent because he studies and learns about topics not assigned in school. Not only did he learn them, but he retained the information in his mind and applied it to other situations. Clearly, Kevin is a very smart thirteen year old! CAN YOU FIND THE TWO TYPES OF TEXT EVIDENCE????

Let’s try to dissect Mrs. Becker’s example… With your group, try to determine the purpose that all the other sentences or phrases play in her response. Hint: This is NOT a trick question; each word serves a purpose!

Paragraph Organization When providing text evidence it is important to organize the paragraph as follows: – Restate the question or prompt – Provide text evidence (2-3 pieces) – Interpretation (1 for each piece of evidence) – Concluding sentence/remind reader of topic or answer to prompt

Transitions: Helps to convey information clearly by establishing logical connections between sentences and paragraphs. They can be single words, quick phrases or full sentences. – For example... – For instance... – One example that shows this happened when... – This is revealed in the novel when... – Based on the reading... – According to the text...
