Presentation transcript:

Teachers, before you start, you may want students to take out a sheet of paper and fold it so they can answer some questions and reflect as you go through the presentation. Students can easily divide their paper into four sections. They can just jot answers as you go through the presentation. This slide is just a preview for YOU to see the questions. You may want them to jot thoughts other than these questions, as well. What do you think you are promised by living in America? How many words do you think are in the Presidential Oath of Office? What do you think is preserved, protected, and defended? How is the Presidential Oath of Office similar or different from our Lifelong Guideline Pledge?

Presidential Inauguration

“Renewing America’s Promise” This is the theme of the 2009 inauguration.

What do you think you are promised by living in America?

Tuesday, January 20 th is Inauguration Day.

On Inauguration Day, the President takes the Oath of Office. This is a promise he makes to the American people. He takes the Oath of Office on the steps of the US Capitol.

The Presidential Oath of Office is a BIG promise that is made few words. You take an OATH every day when you say the Lifelong Guideline Pledge. It has 25 words. How many words do you think Mr. Obama will say when he takes the Oath of Office? Remember…it’s a BIG PROMISE!! There are 37 words in the Presidential Oath of Office.

When the President takes the Oath, he says: I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will faithfully execute the office of President of the United States, and will to the best of my ability, preserve, protect, and defend the Constitution of the United States. I promise I’ll be a good President and I will do my best to make sure that our laws are followed and protected.

What do you hope is PRESERVED, PROTECTED, and DEFENDED?
