James 5:4-12 WWJD

James 5: Behold, the pay of the laborers who mowed your fields, and which has been withheld by you, cries out against you; and the outcry of those who did the harvesting has reached the ears of the Lord of Sabaoth. 5 You have lived luxuriously on the earth and led a life of wanton pleasure; you have fattened your hearts in a day of slaughter. 6 You have condemned and put to death the righteous man; he does not resist you. 7 Therefore be patient, brethren, until the coming of the Lord. The farmer waits for the precious produce of the soil, being patient about it, until it gets the early and late rains. 8 You too be patient; strengthen your hearts, for the coming of the Lord is near. 9 Do not complain, brethren, against one another, so that you yourselves may not be judged; behold, the Judge is standing right at the door. 10 As an example, brethren, of suffering and patience, take the prophets who spoke in the name of the Lord. 11 We count those blessed who endured. You have heard of the endurance of Job and have seen the outcome of the Lord’s dealings, that the Lord is full of compassion and is merciful. 12 But above all, my brethren, do not swear, either by heaven or by earth or with any other oath; but your yes is to be yes, and your no, no, so that you may not fall under judgment.

James 5:1-6 What Will Come 1 Come now, you rich, weep and howl for your miseries which are coming upon you. 2 Your riches have rotted and your garments have become moth-eaten. 3 Your gold and your silver have rusted; and their rust will be a witness against you and will consume your flesh like fire. It is in the last days that you have stored up your treasure! What They’ve Done 4 Behold, the pay of the laborers who mowed your fields, and which has been withheld by you, cries out against you; and the outcry of those who did the harvesting has reached the ears of the Lord of Sabaoth. 5 You have lived luxuriously on the earth and led a life of wanton pleasure; you have fattened your hearts in a day of slaughter. 6 You have condemned and put to death the righteous man; he does not resist you.

James 5: Therefore be patient, brethren, until the coming of the Lord.

Title: WWJD, What Would Jack Bauer Do? Outline: 1. What patience is - The example of the farmer (vv7-8) - The example of the prophets (vv10-11) 2. What patience isn’t - Complaining (v9) - Swearing (v12)

12 But above all, my brethren, do not swear, either by heaven or by earth or with any other oath; but your yes is to be yes, and your no, no, so that you may not fall under judgment. example prohibition example Structure of James 5:7-12

1. What Patience Is: a Definition Makrothumos ( μακροθύμως) from makros meaning “long” and thumos meaning “temper” “the attitude of self-restraint that does not try to get even for a wrong that has been done” (JB Lightfoot)

1. What Patience Is: The Example of a Farmer James 5:7-8 7 Therefore be patient, brethren, until the coming of the Lord. The farmer waits for the precious produce of the soil, being patient about it, until it gets the early and late rains. 8 You too be patient; strengthen your hearts, for the coming of the Lord is near.

1. What Patience Is: The Example of the Prophets James 5: As an example, brethren, of suffering and patience, take the prophets who spoke in the name of the Lord. 11 We count those blessed who endured. You have heard of the endurance of Job and have seen the outcome of the Lord’s dealings, that the Lord is full of compassion and is merciful.

2. What Patience Isn’t: Complaining James 5:9 9 Do not complain, brethren, against one another, so that you yourselves may not be judged; behold, the Judge is standing right at the door.

2. What Patience Isn’t: Swearing James 5:12 12 But above all, my brethren, do not swear, either by heaven or by earth or with any other oath; but your yes is to be yes, and your no, no, so that you may not fall under judgment.

Matthew 5:33-37James 5:12 33 "Again, you have heard that the ancients were told, 'YOU SHALL NOT MAKE FALSE VOWS, BUT SHALL FULFILL YOUR VOWS TO THE LORD.' 34 "But I say to you, make no oath at all, 12 But above all, my brethren, do not swear, either by heaven, for it is the throne of God, either by heaven 35 or by the earth, for it is the footstool of His feet, or by earth or by Jerusalem…or with any other oath; 37 "But let your statement be, 'Yes, yes' or 'No, no'; but your yes is to be yes, and your no, no, anything beyond these is of evil.so that you may not fall under judgment. A Comparison: Matt. 5:33-37 and James 5:12

Matthew 23: "Woe to you, blind guides, who say, 'Whoever swears by the temple, that is nothing; but whoever swears by the gold of the temple is obligated.' 17 "You fools and blind men! Which is more important, the gold or the temple that sanctified the gold? 18 "And, 'Whoever swears by the altar, that is nothing, but whoever swears by the offering on it, he is obligated.' 19 "You blind men, which is more important, the offering, or the altar that sanctifies the offering? 20 "Therefore, whoever swears by the altar, swears both by the altar and by everything on it. 21 "And whoever swears by the temple, swears both by the temple and by Him who dwells within it. 22 "And whoever swears by heaven, swears both by the throne of God and by Him who sits upon it.

2. What Patience Isn’t: Swearing James 5:12 12 But above all, my brethren, do not swear, either by heaven or by earth or with any other oath; but your yes is to be yes, and your no, no, so that you may not fall under judgment.

Discussion Questions 1) There are two targets of injustice: 1. Injustice against us 2. Injustice against others Which does this passage address? How are they different? How should we respond to them? In the same way? Or differently? 2 ) I think the Second Coming should be a part of a believer’s dialogue. Therefore, what are some things we are looking forward to when Christ returns? 3) Matthew Henry lists 4 modes of complaining: - murmuring groans at what befalls you - distrustful groans as to what may further come - revengeful groans against the instruments of your sufferings - envious groans at those who have not such calamities How have you struggled with such? How does the 2 nd Coming address complaining? 4) So is swearing in court allowed? Jehovah’s witnesses say no. What about making marriage vows? What is James forbidding exactly in the passage?
