THE IMAGERY OF POETRY List 2 fabulous examples of imagery. Be sure to explain why this example struck you as meaningful. See example below: Lines 7- 9: “He’d a French cocked hat on his forehead, a bunch of lace at his chin / A coat of the claret velvet, and breeches of brown doeskin. / they fitted with never a wrinkle. His boots were up to his thigh.” I loved this example of imagery because it helped me to see the highway many very clearly. I could tell that he was wealthy and dashing from the description.

THE THEME OF POETRY Which of the following themes do you think BEST fits the poem? (You should have more than one piece of evidence.) Jealousy is a strong emotion that makes a person miserable. People who break the law will be brought to justice. True love is strong even in great tragedies. People who go against their parent’s wishes will end up in trouble.

ICE quotes ICE is an acronym that stands for Introduce Cite Explain Check out the example below: Johnny shows that he is always thinking of others when he says, “Stay gold, Ponyboy. Stay gold” (150). This proves that he is thoughtful since he is moments away from death, but still cares enough about Ponyboy to give a last piece of advice.

ICE quotes How is this different that what we have been doing? You are making sure that your transition is setting the reader up to understand the purpose of the quote. You are DIRECTLY COPYING the example or statement from the text (citation). Check out the example below: Johnny shows that he is always thinking of others when he says, “Stay gold, Ponyboy. Stay gold” (150). This proves that he is thoughtful since he is moments away from death, but still cares enough about Ponyboy to give a last piece of advice.

Check out this sample paragraph The best theme that is seen in The Outsiders is that people are the same underneath, even if they come from different backgrounds. This can be seen when Cherry tells Ponyboy that things are rough all over (55). Through this comment, she is letting Ponyboy know that even though she is wealthy and has a great future ahead of her, she still has problems. Perhaps the best example of this theme is seen when when Cherry and Ponyboy are talking in the parking lot. Ponyboy asks Cherry if she can seen the sunset on the westside. When she responds, he answers, “You can see it from the eastside, too” (99). The quote lets shows that Ponyboy has realized that even though they are from two different classes, they both feel emotions and see the same things in life. These two examples show that the theme, people are the same underneath, even if they come from different backgrounds, is see in the book.

Your turn Which of the following themes do you think BEST fits the poem Write a WELL STRUCTURED paragraph to support your answer. Make sure you have at least 2 examples from the poem. Make sure at least 1 examples is an ICE quote. Jealousy is a strong emotion that makes a person miserable. People who break the law will be brought to justice. True love is strong even in great tragedies. People who go against their parent’s wishes will end up in trouble.
