PSAs on Film Liners CAFA Convention Marriott Hotel & Golf Resort Saturday, February 11, 2007

Types of Film Liners PET (Polyester) u Highest temperature resistance u Strong, stretch resistant u Kiss & die cut-able PE (Polyethylene) u Lower heat resistance u Softer & “hand” stretchable u Low & high density available PP (Polypropylene) u Higher temperature resistance than PE u Soft - hand stretchable u Die cuttable

Paper Liners vs. Film Liners Paper Liners u Described by basis weight u Adequate caliper control u Adequate cross web profile u Moisture sensitive u Tears easily u Opaque u Generally lower cost Film liners u Described by caliper u Excellent caliper control u Excellent cross web profile u Moisture resistant u Good tear strength u Clear u Generally higher priced.

Typical Silicone-Coated Release Liners u 55 lb. Densified Kraft (SCK) u 60 lb. Poly-coated u 74 lb. Poly-coated u 80 lb. Densified Kraft (SCK) u 12 pt. Board (poly-coated) u 1.5-mil Polyester Film u 2.0-mil Polyester Film u 4.0-mil Polyester Film u 5.0-mil Polyethylene & Polypropylene Film SCK = Super Calendered Kraft

So…What’s a “Lb.”? Lb. refers to the basis weight of the paper expressed per ream where…. u 1 ream of paper = Square Yards –333.3 SY of a 55 lb. liner will weigh 55 lbs. u 12 pt. Board refers neither to basis weight nor to caliper. It’s a different measure. –12 pt. Board in basis weight = 140 lb.

What about Poly-coated? u The paper & the polyethylene coating are added together to get the total basis weight. u Example: A 74 lb. poly-coated liner could consist of a 50 lb. paper coated with 12 lbs. of polyethylene on each side.

Advantages of Film Liners u Strength to reduce tear during removal u Dust free for clean room operations u High speed rotary die cutting u Reduced wear on rotary dies u Ease of automation (robotic assembly) u Moisture resistant u Clear visibility for substrate marking

Industries Using Film Liners In addition to the abrasives industry, film liners can be found typically in the following: u Electronics u Automotive u Medical u Fenestration or Window Manufacturers

Summary Film liners can be used regardless of PSA construction. Cost is relative to film caliper. Adchem has expertise in engineering products on film liners.
