WIMA²S – SRC10 Ostend – 22 September WIMA²S & Airborne Surveillance Air assets (Aircraft, UAV) have a key contribution in building a precise « Common Operating Picture » through detection, localization, identification and tracking of all ships especially those which can threat Homeland (near the border or not), Airborne platforms: are well suited for surveillance over extended areas, ensure continuous and discrete tracking, perform close-up inspection when needed. Air assets (Aircraft, UAV) is a key for maritime surveillance.
WIMA²S – SRC10 Ostend – 22 September WIMA²S – Project Objectives Safety Security Environmental Multi-Missions System in a System WIMA²S addresses the full spectrum of public service missions, including protection against all kind of trafficking and protection of the European resources. WIMA²S is a building block part of a system of systems.
WIMA²S – SRC10 Ostend – 22 September WIMA²S – Project Objectives The WIMA²S project intends to explore and evaluate the potential benefit, in term of efficiency, cost effectiveness and accuracy, that could be brought to maritime wide area surveillance by new concepts such as: Remotely controlled airborne sensors, Unmanned Airborne Platforms, Analysis of airborne sensors, New algorithms, Integration with cooperative assets UAV Remote controlled System Stand alone system
WIMA²S – SRC10 Ostend – 22 September A Survey of End-User Needs WIMA²S after the first & half year End-User Requirements: 3 tasks achieved, Questionnaire, report on existing airborne assets, interviews, WIMA²S workshop More than 25 internal reports, 7 end-user interviews A workshop with 11 End-users from 9 agencies, 8 presentations A deliverable with 3 annexes.
WIMA²S – SRC10 Ostend – 22 September End-User Conclusions Present surveillance problems Surveillance aircrafts are not furnished with real time data link enabling SoS integration, No direct access to satellite imagery, VMS data… Technical systems are not fully compatible. Possible improvements Integration of different assets (A/Cs, UAVs) and surveillance systems, Implementation of a complete digital integrated surveillance system, Use of UAV (MALE class), Real time data link implementation, Centralize monitoring in one or more commanding centers. Restrictions/Prohibitions Confidentiality of data, Budgetary restrictions, Air Traffic Management (ATM) safety regulations for UAV.
