E-Folio Educational Trajectory Update

Develop standards and specifications to promote interoperability of data contained in portfolios: – Among academic institutions – Between academic institutions and data custodians. Eye toward ultimately share information on professional competencies Goal of e-Folio Project

Purpose of the Educational Trajectory Pilot Project Expand the scope of routinely reported activities and accomplishments for medical students. Develop technical standards for sharing information on this expanded scope. Share data among small number of academic institutions

Work to Date 17 Conference Calls among EII members December 2008 to present 10 Conference Calls among Medbiquitous members August 2009 to present GEA Agenda for Action EII Meeting Chicago June 2009 AAMC Presentations

Agreed Upon Principles of Use Portfolio as a process not a “thing” or a “place” Data moves with learner’s authorization “Virtual data repository” Indicators of data quality included – Sources of data identified Primary source verified Self reported by learner Develop displays to facilitate ease in interpretation with ability to “drill down”

Virtual Data Repository Data is drawn: – From a network of local data repositories – Just in time Data stays where it is

Decisions to Date Work on educational trajectory as proof of concept that data can be shared. Focus on medical schools for first round sharing of data. Focus on collecting “new” data not on integrating existing databases. Include international perspective in the development of technical specification Include residents and medical students in the identification of relevant data elements

Develop strategies to collect and share information during transitions across the Continuum Informal extracurricular activities Formal extracurricular activities Academic difficulties Gaps in study Dates of study in formal curriculum

Priority of Use Cases Learner extracts educational trajectory data Graduate program director requests educational trajectory data Researcher compiles and examines educational trajectory data looking for trends Administrator sends educational trajectory data to graduate program.

Ground Rules for Group Work With busy schedules not everyone will be able to join each call. Work will proceed in the absence of group members Use small groups to advance the work and then share with the larger working groups Members accept the role to keep others informed and to report back questions and or concerns for further discussion

Small Groups Formed Informal extracurricular: Linda Lewin leader Formal extracurricular: Elaine Dannefer leader Technical architecture: Kevin Souza leader Academic difficulties/LOA: Pat O’Sullivan leader
