Advising Conference 2009 Using NSSE Results to Enhance the Impact of the Undergraduate Experience Context Ohio state has attracted increasingly well- prepared first-year undergraduate cohorts for over a decade This trend can be attributed to a combination of research-based enrollment management strategies in admissions, marketing, financial aid, and first- year programming The results are evident in rising persistence and degree completion rates What else “matters” in college that we can influence?

Advising Conference 2009 Using NSSE Results to Enhance the Impact of the Undergraduate Experience NSSE & Student Engagement What Really Matters in College: Student Engagement Because individual effort and involvement are the critical determinants of impact, institutions should focus on the ways they can shape their academic, interpersonal, and extracurricular offerings to encourage student engagement. Pascarella & Terenzini, How College Affects Students, 2005, p. 602

Supportive Campus Environment Advising Conference 2009 Using NSSE Results to Enhance the Impact of the Undergraduate Experience

Advising Conference 2009 Using NSSE Results to Enhance the Impact of the Undergraduate Experience Advising The following items speak more directly to students’ advising experiences These items represent a combination of NSSE base survey items and additional items agreed upon by a consortium of AAU-participating institutions

Advising Conference 2009 Using NSSE Results to Enhance the Impact of the Undergraduate Experience Advising: How would you evaluate the quality of academic advising you have received at your institution?

Advising Conference 2009 Using NSSE Results to Enhance the Impact of the Undergraduate Experience Advising: How would you rate the quality of academic advising you have received from your college or department at this university?

Advising Conference 2009 Using NSSE Results to Enhance the Impact of the Undergraduate Experience Advising: How would you rate this university’s responsiveness to student academic problems?

Advising Conference 2009 Using NSSE Results to Enhance the Impact of the Undergraduate Experience Advising: During the past year, from what source did you receive most of your academic advising?

Advising Conference 2009 Using NSSE Results to Enhance the Impact of the Undergraduate Experience Advising: The advisor(s) in your college or department is (are) available when you need to see her/him (them).

Advising Conference 2009 Using NSSE Results to Enhance the Impact of the Undergraduate Experience Advising: The information you’ve received from academic advisors has been accurate and up to date.

Advising Conference 2009 Using NSSE Results to Enhance the Impact of the Undergraduate Experience Advising: At this university students have to run around from one place to another to get the information or approvals they need.

Advising Conference 2009 Using NSSE Results to Enhance the Impact of the Undergraduate Experience Key Results Seniors score lower in the Enriching Educational Experience category relative to AAU benchmark norm. Seniors are more likely to seek advice from individuals who are not advisors, compared to first-year students. First-year students appear to seek advice from friends and family members at a higher rate when 2004 and 2007 results are compared. Does the larger pattern across institutions of lower senior ratings in both enriching educational experiences and advising represent an opportunity to leverage advising to increase participation in study abroad, co- ops/internships, research experiences? Is there an opportunity to connect advisors with parents and family members to leverage their influence on students?

Advising Conference 2009 Using NSSE Results to Enhance the Impact of the Undergraduate Experience Discussion Questions Do the results confirm what you have experienced as an advisor regarding student engagement? Were there any surprises or results that jumped out at you? Among the five benchmark categories, which do you think you might be able to influence as an academic advisor? How? How might these results influence your advising strategies – individually and collectively? What additional ideas or questions do you have now that you have been introduced to NSSE and OSU’s NSSE results?

Advising Conference 2009 Using NSSE Results to Enhance the Impact of the Undergraduate Experience Next Steps Additional customized reports and analyses can be done by Institutional Research and Planning. Spring 2010 is the next planned administration of NSSE – still time to implement a change or initiative and gauge changes in NSSE results. Keep in mind that many other things are changing during these time frames – additional research using our NSSE data can help to account for the “effects” of students’ characteristics, backgrounds and other factors.
