Advising Conference 2009 Using NSSE Results to Enhance the Impact of the Undergraduate Experience Key Results Seniors score lower in the Enriching Educational Experience category relative to AAU benchmark norm. Seniors are more likely to seek advice from individuals who are not advisors, compared to first-year students. First-year students appear to seek advice from friends and family members at a higher rate when 2004 and 2007 results are compared. Does the larger pattern across institutions of lower senior ratings in both enriching educational experiences and advising represent an opportunity to leverage advising to increase participation in study abroad, co- ops/internships, research experiences? Is there an opportunity to connect advisors with parents and family members to leverage their influence on students?

Spring 2010 is the next planned administration of NSSE – still time to implement a change or initiative and gauge changes in NSSE results. Keep in mind that many other things are changing during these time frames – additional research using our NSSE data can help to account for the “effects” of students’ characteristics, backgrounds and other factors.
