Brookwood High School STEAM Program Information for Rising Juniors (Class of 2017) and Parents March 09,

What is STEAM? It stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics, but it is so much more than that.  A focus on the areas of STEM plus Fine Arts (musical arts, theatre arts, visual arts)  Integration of multiple disciplines (science, math, fine arts, and others)  A focus on hands-on, real-world experiences, problem solving, application, exploration, and innovation  Prepares well-rounded students for college and the workforce and provides unique educational opportunities 2

AP & CTE Tracks Criteria 15 STEAM Extracurricular Activity At least 2 of the following extracurricular STEAM clubs or activities are required at any point in the high school career: At least ONE of the following Brookwood- sponsored extracurricular STEM clubs: STEM-based honor society Competition-based STEM club Other STEM club At least ONE of the following Fine Arts extracurricular activities: Drama Club Jazz Band Dance Club Art Club Marching Band One of several Fine Arts Honor Societies At least ONE of the following independent activities: STEM-based competition sponsored by a Brookwood STEM teacher OR ANDAND

AP & CTE Tracks Criteria 16 Field Study At least 1 of the following internship or research experiences with a supplementary capstone project is required during the 11 th and/or 12 th grade: At least ONE of the following Internship Experiences in a STEM field: Work-Based Learning course QUEST Gifted Internship Examining the Teaching Profession/ Careers in Education course Science Research Internship course Summer or school-year STEAM camp or immersion experience (CTE Track only): Some internships required for Maxwell and Grayson Tech’s CTE Pathway Completion may qualify At least ONE of the following Research Experiences studying a STEM topic: Gifted Directed Study Independent Research Project (CTE Track Only): Some research projects required for Maxwell and Grayson Tech’s CTE Pathway Completion may qualify Field Study Experience must be preapproved by your STEAM Advisor. OR *Students do NOT have to use a class period in order to complete the Field Study.

Field Study Requirements 17 Placement, research, and/or study topic must be preapproved by your STEAM Advisor or the STEAM Administrator. Culminating capstone project (i.e., portfolio and presentation of experiences and learning) is required. For Internship Experience Options: Students must be engaged in meaningful, real-world experiences in the field of study. For Research Experience Options: The research or study must focus on a topic that is above and beyond the AKS covered in a course offered at Brookwood.

Internship Placements/ Research Ideas 18 Completing FS Independently ( not as part of an existing course ): 1. FS Proposal preparation and student- initiated contact (for internships) or Research Plan preparation 2. Verification by advisor -If needed  Advisor assistance with placement/ research idea 3. Completion of Capstone requirements Using an Existing Course to also meet FS Requirement: 1. Course teacher will handle placement and all requirements for course credit 2. Advisor will preapprove placement, time commitment, and role/project to allow it to count as your STEAM FS 3. Completion of Capstone requirements simultaneously Field Study experiences are individualized opportunities based on student interest.

Capstone Project 19 Portfolio Completed over the course of junior and senior year with Advisor assistance Primarily designed to be completed simultaneously with the Field Study Due at the end of the senior year Displays STEAM experiences and reflections Presentation Student-prepared display at STEAM Celebration Night Field Study Symposium Students will be available to answer questions about their display at the Symposium Shows, at-a-glance, the Field Study and STEAM experience Includes components from Portfolio

Capstone Project 20 Portfolio Artifacts will be compiled during junior and senior years. Students will be guided and assisted by Advisor. Completion timelines/ deadlines can be modified based on FS timing and student needs Artifact examples:  Proposal/ plan for FS  Field Study mentor/ supervisor interview  Photo journal from FS  Time sheets/ activity log from FS  Reflection

Capstone Project 21 Presentation Part of the Field Study Symposium and STEAM Celebration Night Students will prepare displays reflective of their internship experience or research process/ findings at the Symposium (modeled after science research conferences) Students will be available to answer questions to parents, business partners, other STEAM students, and STEAM Advisory Council
