Socorro Middle School: Implementing the New Graduation Plans in Socorro ISD

Objectives for This Meeting Understand the new House Bill 5 (HB5) graduation requirements. Understand the new graduation plans under HB5. Learn about the five Endorsements under HB5. Verify your child’s Endorsement choice. Clarify questions you may have. Sign and date your child’s Endorsement Verification Plan.

What is HB5 and What Does it Change? Requires each student entering 9 th grade to graduate under the new graduation plans. Requires each student entering 9 th grade to choose an endorsement.

What are Other Changes? New attendance requirements: If a student is not in attendance 90% of the time, student will receive “LOC” instead of a grade and will receive no credit until the LOC contract is completed.

We Have New Graduation Plans If you graduate with an SISD Endorsement, you graduate DLA. SISD has prescribed the DLA for all students. SISD Foundation SISD Foundation plus Endorsement Distinguished Level of Achievement (SISD Foundation, plus Endorsement and Algebra II) Automatic admission to most 4 year TX public universities (Top 10% + DLA) Postsecondary Education

What is an Endorsement? An Endorsement is similar to a college major. This is the plan that you will choose to determine your course of study in high school. You must choose an Endorsement before you register for high school.

Pathway to Success Complete Texas Achievement Plan Complete Endorsement Verification Form Register for High School Career Cruising (Inventories, Exploration, College Searches)

Next Steps Each student will meet with their high school counselor during the ninth grade year to review their Endorsement and Texas Achievement Plan. Students will then meet with their counselor on a yearly basis and as needed. Although students must choose one Endorsement, students may actually earn more than one. Counselors will discuss this with students.
