October 29-30, 2001MEIDEX - Crew Tutorial - SoftwareH - 3 The PGSC4130 Flight Software 1 33 The MEIDEX Software Package consists of two Computer Software Configuration Items (CSCIs) which execute in a master/slave configuration. The master CSCI resides on the Payload and General Support Computer (PGSC). It provides the capability to setup, monitor, and control the experiment. An alternate command and control capability will be available via the remote PGSC in the Payload Operations Control Center (POCC). The PGSC in the POCC is also referred to as Customer Ground Support Equipment (CGSE). The slave CSCI resides in the C&DH electronics and responds to commands/requests from the PGSC to control the experiment and to telemeter the experiment’s health and status.

October 29-30, 2001MEIDEX - Crew Tutorial - SoftwareH - 4 PGSC Operator Interface 1 33 When the PGSC software is started the PGSC Operator Interface is displayed. The red and yellow limit violations are in the current telemetry packet. The PGSC is operated by a series of menu and button controls that are spread at the top of the screen. By pressing the OpenComm the PGSC communication port is open (green) and shut (red). This button can be activated by “Comm Control” Pressing the AutoTlm toggles automatic generation of telemetry request command: green is for request enable and red is for request not enable. “Pages” opens 17 secondary window displays through which the operator can control the payload and get the status of different functions of the payload instrumentation. 10 of these windows can be opened by the buttons in the second row of this window. The most important windows displays will be described herein.

The command and parameter(s) selected by the operator will appear in the command buffer display below the scrollable displays. The “XMIT” control Forwards the command buffer to the communication port. The “CLEAR” control clears the command buffer. October 29-30, 2001MEIDEX - Crew Tutorial - SoftwareH - 7 The control of the payload from either the Orbiter PGSC or the POCC PGSC cannot be initiated until one of these two PGSC (the Master) takes over the control signifying to the second PGSC (the slave) that the control is in the other hands. This is done by scrolling to “IMTAKINGOVER” and clicking “XMIT”. By this command the master PGSC can initiate its control over the payload. Command Generator Display – Initiation

October 29-30, 2001MEIDEX - Crew Tutorial - SoftwareH - 10 Command Generator Display – Important Commands The following commands are currently defined as “operationally important” in the PGSC configuration file: IMTAKINGOVER CHD_RESET PSWLIMIT NSWLIMIT OVERCURRENTLIMIT When an Operationally Important command is selected from the Command Generator Display and “transmit” control clicked, the operator will be shown the confirmation dialog illustrated. Click “OK” transmit the command For “PSWLIMIT” and “NSWLIMIT” see - Truss Pointing Display. “OVERCURRENT” value is set by OSC to be 2.5Amp. (See CDR) - motor stall current is 5.2Amp.

October 29-30, 2001MEIDEX - Crew Tutorial - SoftwareH - 15 Relay Commanding Display This display provides a quick means to command the experiment electric relays without going to the command generator display. To select a command, place the cursor on it and press the mouse left button. The command selected will appear highlighted in green above the “Xmit” button. The command will be executed by pressing the “Xmit” button. The switch-position light (to the right of the relay command pairs) will turn green if the corresponding relay is closed.

October 29-30, 2001MEIDEX - Crew Tutorial - SoftwareH - 16 Truss Pointing Display This displays provides a visual presentation of: Camera truss orientation Truss telemetry information Command window to transmit truss pointing commands.  Telemetry points provide truss motor power, current and temperature, limit switch position indication, slew count and direction, software stop, truss status and truss angle parameters.  Slew commands are entered in the red truss commanding box as direction (+/-) and the relative truss angle (in degrees) to slew.  The camera truss orientation gives a visual depiction of the truss position in relation to the -Z direction

The truss point command is actually two commands sent sequentially  The first command is a “set direction” relay command, which sets the direction of movement (via RELAYK15)  The second command is the “counts” command which contains a two byte integer which indicates to the C&DH during how many 0.1 second counts it will apply power to the truss. The “set direction” command will not be executed if a truss movement is ongoing. The “counts” command will not be executed unless a “set direction” command has been received The control of the motion of the truss is through a series of “counts” where each count corresponds to 0.1 seconds of motor motion. The C&DH controls the number of these counts.

October 29-30, 2001MEIDEX - Crew Tutorial - SoftwareH - 18 The truss slew rate is 1 degree/sec The truss has four stop settings:  A mechanical stop that stops the truss at  30 degrees  A hardware stop (micro switch) that “kills” the motor current (and changes its direction) when mechanically triggered (exceeded) at  27 degrees  A software stop (*) that stops the truss at  25 degrees. If these stops are exceeded the C&DH stops the motor power.  A command stop(**) that stops the truss motion at  21 degrees. The C&DH validate truss pointing commands to verify that motion past the software stops (  25 degrees) will not be exceeded - a command past the software stop will be discarded. The C&DH removes power from the truss motor in the event of a motor over current condition (*) The software stops commands (PSWSTOP and NSWSTOP) – (see the Command Generator Display) write new values to the upper(positive) and lower (negative) software stops of the truss motor assembly. Each command has one parameter the upper or lower stop values (0-255 counts converted from degrees input by the operator) where each count is 0.1sec (or 0.1degree) of truss motion. (**) The software limit commands (PSWLIMIT and NSWLIMIT) – (see the Command Generator Display) write new values to the upper(positive) and lower (negative) software limits of the truss motor motion Truss Pointing Display Continued

However, to avoid saturation (GL >255) it was found that the configuration of the Peak Video Level (PVL) has to be lower than 250 and its value strongly depends on the area of the ROI that will take the peak (the maximal) radiance level. This data is very important especially in case of sprites or small clouds or land features (islands) that may be saturated if the PVL is not properly set. Green button lights on the digital display generally represent “ON” or safe/normal condition.”White” lights are “OFF” or unsafe/not normal. The bars below the VCR panels represent the progress bars for the VCR tape usage. As the VCR records images, the elapsed seconds display updates. In the event that the PGSC is interrupted, the progress bar may be re-synchronized by entering down the time difference in the “elapsed offset” space. To enable this feature, select the “Use Offsets” control. Digital Telemetry Display

The three VCRs. Thermostat #1 - located near the thermostat #1 (of heater #1) just above the video buffer. Thermostat #2 - located on the bracket of heater #2 (below the window).
