Let’s start with a Game/Activity Common Ground Rock-Paper-Scissor Champions

Reflection How was the activity? What did you notice about this game?

Defining Leadership What does Leadership mean to you? Take a minute and discuss with a partner how you define leadership? Questions to Consider… What is leadership? Do you consider yourself a leader? What are qualities of a good leader?

Defining Leadership Leadership - the ability to influence a group or individuals toward the achievement of a particular goal (Roper, 2012) Who do you think of when you think of a good leader?

Defining Community Building What does Community Building mean to you? Take a minute and discuss with a partner how you define Community Building Questions to Consider… What is community? What communities are you a member of? What’s the benefit of being part of a community?

Defining Community Building Community Building – the act of connecting others in relationship with each other in a way that enhances the sense of interdependence, mutuality, and shared destination (Roper, 2012)

How does Leadership and Community Building Intertwine? Why put these two together? What is the value of incorporating leadership and community building? Learning more about what it means to be a leader and acquiring skills and knowledge in the area of community building will help all of us reach a common goal. The goal will help us enhance our personal awareness of our own and others’ leadership strengths, while also providing opportunities to develop skills to enhance the sense of relationship, communication and connections within groups.

As leaders we must start with Self Ask Questions like: Who am I? Why am I here? What is my purpose? What do I hope to get done? What matters to me?

The Power of Personal Agency A person’s capability to originate and direct actions for given purposes; Influenced by the belief in one’s effectiveness in performing specific tasks; Our judgments about our ability to construct personal relationship networks and influence others; Our beliefs about our ability to be a leader and community builder.

Activities to start understanding Self as a leader… Who am I poem assignment Opportunity to reflect on where you came from, who you are now, and what has made you you. Values Identify what is important to you Strengths Quest Assessment test that identifies your top 5 strengths Meyers-Briggs Type Inventory (MBTI) Assessment test that identifies your preferences and personality type Strong Interest Inventory (SII) Assessment test that identifies your interests *You can find more about these services at your institutions (career services office, leadership office)

Scenario… Remember when you first stepped onto campus for your first day. This could be for Orientation or your first day in class. How did it feel? Did you know anyone? Did you feel like you fit in? Did you feel like you mattered?

Marginality and Mattering Marginality Feelings of not fitting in Produces feelings of self-consciousness Creates an inability to perform at one’s usual ability level. Characterized by feeling unnoticed, ignored, unrecognized, and disconnected from others

Marginality and Mattering Continued… Mattering How much do I matter to others? Feeling we belong and matter to others Others are interested in what happens to us, empathize with us, and/or appreciates us Feeling that we are needed by the people around us Is positively related to self-esteem Promotes a healthy and successful transition.

Five Aspects of Mattering 1. Attention – feeling noticed 2. Importance - the belief one is cared about 3. Ego extension - feeling that someone will be proud of what one does or will sympathize with one’s failure 4. Dependence - the feeling of being needed 5. Appreciation - the feeling that one’s efforts are appreciated by others.

Incorporating it All… How does having everyone matter connect to leadership and community building?
