Electrolytes By Jake, Elliott, and Jacob

What are electrolytes?  Electrolytes are substances that turn into ions in a solution and are then able to conduct electricity.  Electrolytes are essential for normal body functions, such as digestion and cellular respiration.

Where are Electrolytes?  Electrolytes are found in solutions of acids, bases, salts, and even some gases.  The primary ions in electrolytes are sodium, potassium, calcium, magnesium, chloride, and hydrogen.

Affects of Electrolytes  Increase in amount of water in your body.  Increases blood pH.  Stimulates muscle action

What are Electrolytes Found in  Sports Drinks  Contain sodium and potassium salts which replenish lost nutrients after a workout or exercise which causes dehydration.  Athletes who workout out for a long period of time are at a risk of suffering from dehydration due to lack of electrolytes.

Dangers  Since sports drinks also contain a high amount of sugar, they are not recommended for daily use by children.  Instead, children should drink water while exercising and replenishing fluids.

Signs of Dehydration  Thirst  Headache  Weakness  Dizziness  Cramps  Chills  Vomiting  Nausea

Electrolyte Imbalances  Hypernatremia- Too much sodium  Hyponatremia- Lack of sodium  Hyperkalemia- Too much potassium  Hypokalemia- Lack of potassium

How to Treat Electrolyte Imbalances  Increase intake of certain foods, such as potatoes and bananas for potassium, and vegetables for sodium and magnesium.  After an extended workout, drink sports drinks with at least 85 grams of potassium and 45 grams of sodium.
