We hope you will find our nutrition training program, Power Up By Eating Smart, a valuable training tool for your team. It provides an overall review of nutrition with a primary focus on teen athletes. We suggest you share the presentation with your athletes at the beginning of the training season for maximum benefit. Power Up By Eating Smart Presenter Instructions and Guidelines Suggested Guidelines ▪ Set an hour aside at the beginning of the season to discuss the importance of good nutrition with your team. ▪ Be prepared to show the PowerPoint presentation in an appropriate room at your school. ▪ Make copies of the Daily Diet Tracking Chart to distribute to each athlete during your meeting. ▪ Distribute the sports nutrition brochure, "Any Way You Play It, Play It With Milk!" to each athlete. ▪ Serve water, chocolate milk (the "new" sports drink) and a healthy snack at the meeting to demonstrate healthy eating. Invite parents to donate these to the team. ▪ Hang the "Chocolate Milk – The Ultimate Sports Drink" poster in a visible area – such as the locker room - for athletes to see on a daily basis. ▪ Be sure to apply for your FREE got milk? milk cooler! Following are some menu suggestions: Menu 1 Spaghetti with Tomato Sauce and Parmesan Cheese Bread Mixed salad Low-Fat Chocolate Milk Fresh Fruit Menu 2 Broiled Chicken Sandwich with lettuce and tomato Green Salad Milk or Chocolate Milk Orange Slide #42 Have students come up with ideas. Following are some suggestions: - Toast or bagel with peanut butter - Non-fat milk - Banana - String Cheese - Cereal Bar Slide #49 The ratio of carbohydrate to protein should be 3:1. This chocolate milk shows 23:8 which is close to this ratio. Slide #52 Note the nutrition density of chocolate milk compared to the non-nutrient content of some other beverages. Slide #53 Have students come up with some post-competition meal ideas. Following are some suggestions: - Turkey and cheese sandwich on whole wheat bread with milk, water or juice - Peanut butter and whole wheat crackers with milk - Ham and cheese sandwich, fresh vegetables and milk - Whole grain crackers with cheese and apple slices, water Slide #55 Have students come up with ideas.
