Insects and Diseases

 EGG-LARVA-PUPA-ADULT

 Larva: ◦ Several instars ◦ Molt between each ◦ Most growth in final stages ◦ All growth occurs as larva

 Pupa: ◦ Resting stage ◦ Some insects pupate in cocoons ◦ Little or no movement ◦ Wings appear here

 Adult: ◦ Adult stage often appears as vastly different than larva stage. ◦ Larva and adults may feed on completely different sources of food.

 EGG-NYMPH STAGES- ADULT

 Nymph stages are similar in appearance to the adult stage except for SIZE (grasshoppers)  Lack wings  Several instars  Growth  Nymph stages generally feed on the same food sources as adults.

 Adults ◦ No more growth ◦ Wings ◦ Able to reproduce

 Some insect species complete their lifecycle several times each year (known as generations or broods).  Other insect species may require a number of years to complete one life cycle (17 year cicada).
