 S2L1. Students will investigate the life cycles of different living organisms.  a. Determine the sequence of the life cycle of common animals in your area: a mammal such as a cat or dog or classroom pet, a bird such as a chicken, an amphibian such as a frog, and an insect such as a butterfly.

 E.A.1 Abilities necessary to do scientific  inquiry  a. Ask a question about objects,  organisms, and events in the  environment.  b. Plan and conduct a simple  investigation.  c. Employ simple equipment and tools  to gather data and extend the senses.  d. Use data to construct a reasonable  explanation.  e. Communicate investigations and  explanations.

 4. Critical Thinking, Problem Solving,  and Decision Making  Students use critical thinking skills to plan and  conduct research, manage projects, solve problems,  and make informed decisions using appropriate  digital tools and resources.  a. Identify and define authentic problems and  significant questions for investigation

 Butterflies are flying insects  With scaly wings.  Butterflies have 3 body parts (head, thorax, and abdomen)

 3 body parts  Head, thorax, and abdomen  Tiny sensory hairs  4 wings  6 legs  A pair of antennae  The thorax contains the muscles that make the legs and wings move

 Butterflies have 2 pair of large wings that are attached to the thorax to help them fly  Some butterflies fly as fast as 30 miles per hour and some butterflies fly only 5 miles per hour

 LIFE-CYCLE OF A BUTTERFLY Butterflies and moths undergo complete metamorphosis in which they go through four different life stages.  Egg - A butterfly starts its life as an egg, often laid on a leaf.  Larva - The larva (caterpillar) hatches from an egg and eats leaves or flowers almost constantly. The caterpillar molts (loses its old skin) many times as it grows. The caterpillar will increase up to several thousand times in size before pupating.  Pupa - It turns into a pupa (chrysalis); this is a resting stage.  Adult - A beautiful, flying adult emerges. This adult will continue the cycle.

 Butterflies are found all over the world and in all types of environments: hot and cold, dry and moist, at sea level and high in the mountains. Most butterfly species, however, are found in tropical areas, especially tropical rainforests.

 The children will draw a chart and list the different characteristics of a Butterfly.
