2013 Rite Aid Cleveland Marathon Water Stops

Race Day- Instructions  Please arrive at the water stop on time or early  Wear your Volunteer or Organization T-Shirt  Remember to check the weather- The race goes rain or shine!  Make sure you dress appropriately

Step 1: Check your supplies when you arrive You should have: 1. Cups 2. Water containers to mix PowerAde 3. Pitchers 4. PowerAde – powder packets 5. Rakes 6. Gloves 7. Tables 8. Garbage bags CALL HOWARD ( ) IMMEDIATELY IF YOU DO NOT HAVE ENOUGH! Be very specific in what you need.

Step 2: Introductions and Start Filling Cups  Introduce yourself to the people in your group! Meet the team leader -Make friends!  Start filing cups  Start filing cups You must fill a lot of them! We have 20,000+ runners and they come in packs!  Fill the cups 2/3 or 3/4 full! - West Side Water Stops will have cardboard to stack the cups on.

Always Wear your gloves!  Gloves will be provided at each station

Step 3: PowerAde  1 PowerAde packet makes approximately 1 container of PowerAde.  The flavor this year is Mountain Berry Blast!

Step 4: Gel Packs  GU Gel Packs will be at two water stations  # 5 and #12.  If your team is at one of these stops, please remember to hand out GU first, then PowerAde, then water.  Yell out the gel flavors you have. This year we have vanilla bean, mandarin orange, tri-berry and strawberry-banana.

Step 5: Distributing Fluids  Hand out PowerAde FIRST and then water to the participants. People handing out cups should be spread out!  Hold the cup at the bottom half of the cup  Yell what you have in your cup LOUDLY: “Water, Water, Water!” or “PowerAde, PowerAde, PowerAde!”

Step 6: Excitement  Make Friends! Be excited and enthusiastic!  We represent The City of Cleveland!  Cheer and encourage the runners as they pass by! They appreciate it!

Step 7: Cleaning  CLEAN AS YOU GO!  Use the rake and garbage bins provided to clean throughout the race. Rakes are provided to sweep the cups on the road.  All garbage should be in the garbage bags.  Before you leave, please make sure water containers and pitchers are clean.  The Cleveland Marathon staff will pick up the garbage and water containers.

Step 8: Stay You must stay until the last runner passes!

Reminders  There will be Port-A-Johns at each water stop  There is only water on the 10K course- NO PowerAde  Be nice, considerate, understanding and polite with participants and fellow volunteers  Keep calm in stressful situations

Safety Precautions  Whatever your role on race day, if you see a suspicious person, object or vehicle along or near the race course, report the sighting to or notify law enforcement personnel  Do not store, hide or leave any personal items, backpacks, packages or clothes along or near the race course, including the start line areas, finish line areas and water stops.  Keep a look out for bags or packages that appear to be unattended. If in doubt, ask.  Do not store or hold bags or packages for someone you don't know.
