Below are potential CYA statements for the incident: This is the USAF B-1B STOL version to be used on aircraft carriers Testing the B-1Bs capability to melt runway ice in order to justify it’s cost of ownership This is an maintenance step in order to get enough fuel onboard to allow the B-1B to reach operational altitude before having to be in-flight refueled This is a preflight step in order to allow the crew to inspect the tail. The Air Farce has discovered a real use for this dinosaur, as an amusement park ride.
