PTI Mission (draft) The mission of the Pervasive Technology Institute is to invent, develop, deploy, and when appropriate deliver new and innovative applications of information technology - and in so doing improve the quality of life in Indiana and the world as a whole. Additional comments: PTI delivers innovation to the Indiana University community, the State of Indiana, the US, and the world as a whole, aggregating IU’s intellectual leadership in informatics, information technology, and applications thereof to develop important new IT applications and help steer the national research agenda in ways that will be most productive. PTI innovations may be pervasive in many ways; the applications may themselves be pervasive, or pervasively accessible (accessed through handheld devices, for example), or may have outcomes that create benefits that are pervasive in their impact on US society.

What is PTI A partnership among OVPIT, UITS, School of Informatics, Mauer School of Law, Libraries A way for 2 schools, several leading research labs, a group of Libraries and library projects, and parts of OVPIT/RT to project themselves nationally and collaborate internally The identity we will associate with IU’s leading Information Technology Research, Development, and Delivery activities Partnership is probably the best one word to characterize PTI

Collaborative Structure of PTI PTI is a highly collaborative organization. Collaborations will typically involve one Center, UITS/OVPIT, and often collaborators from IU who are not part of PTI. It will often be the case that Centers collaborate with each other. But the most common form of collaboration is likely to be UITS/OVPIT A PTI Center Researchers on campus

RT Mission (draft) The mission of the Research Technologies division of UITS is to develop, deliver, and support advanced technology solutions that improve productivity of and enable new possibilities in research, scholarly endeavors, and creative activity at Indiana University and beyond; and to complement this with education and technology translation activities to improve the quality of life of people in Indiana, the nation, and the world.

PTI and RT Joint goals: – Scientific sustainability – Service and education sustainability – Financial sustainability – Staff sustainability (support and life) How we project ourselves nationally and how we organize ourselves operationally within the university are two different matters. Neither the Mauer School of Law nor the School of Informatics nor the UITS Research Technologies Division will disappear We serve the state. Our competition is primarily outside the state (on rare occasions within the State)

Why have PTI? PTI Mission – Science Mission is set at the Center Level – Engagement, Economic Development, Service, Education, Outreach, Training agendas set at Institute Level RT Mission – Set primarily within OVPIT and UITS – Includes a service mission that goes beyond PTI’s PTI Scale – Proposal sets out a commitment for sustainability of the Institute dramatically different than a typical lab or center. Longevity commitment based on structure of Institute – Centers – Labs – Different scale in In-State impact than any one lab might have – Engagement in the State & Nation (Steer national agendas) – Collaborations within University – R, D, & D that matters – Links the largest entities involved in IT R, D & D – No good comparisons out there, really The funding from Lilly is intended specifically to support those things that distinguish PTI as conceived at scale (size and temporal) PTI represents a confluence of interests; each component of PTI will have and pursue interests and activities outside of PTI
