Russian Contribution to PANDA Project (Part I) Dmitry Morozov, IHEP (Protvino) 1st FRRC International Seminar Moscow, ITEP June

1st FRRC International Seminar - Moscow, June Dmitry Morozov (IHEP, Protvino) 2 PANDA Collaboration At present physicists from 54 institutions from 17 countries 6 Russian institutions are involved Basel, Beijing, Bochum, IIT Bombay, Bonn, Brescia, IFIN Bucharest, Catania,Cracow, IFJ PAN Cracow, Cracow UT, Dresden, Edinburgh, Erlangen, Ferrara, Frankfurt, Genova, Giessen, Glasgow, GSI, Inst. of Physics Helsinki, FZ Jülich, JINR Dubna, Katowice, KVI Groningen, Lanzhou, LNF, Lund, Mainz, Minsk, ITEP Moscow, MPEI Moscow, TU München, Münster, IIT Mumbay, Northwestern, BINP Novosibirsk, IPN Orsay, Pavia, Piemonte Orientale, IHEP Protvino, PNPI St.Petersburg, KTH Stockholm, Stockholm, Torino, Torino Politecnico, Trieste, TSL Uppsala, Tübingen, Uppsala, Valencia, SINS Warsaw, TU Warsaw, AAS Wien

1st FRRC International Seminar - Moscow, June Dmitry Morozov (IHEP, Protvino) 3 PANDA Physics Program Our knowledge of the behaviour of QCD-strong interaction at large distances is still primitive. Spectroscopy experiments within hadron physics are the tool to investigate both in the dynamics governing the interaction of fundamental particles and the existence of new forms of matter PANDA is a state-of-the-art universal detector for strong interaction studies at storage ring HESR with circumference of 442 m at FAIR Antiprotons: p = GeV/c,L = cm -2 sec -1, σ p /p= Major topics of the PANDA physics program:  Charmonium spectroscopy => testing confinement  QCD exotics – glueballs (ggg), hybrids (ccg), pentaquarks…  hidden and open charm mesons in nuclei  strange and charmed baryons in nuclear fields Physics book is in preparation

1st FRRC International Seminar - Moscow, June Dmitry Morozov (IHEP, Protvino) 4 PANDA setup

1st FRRC International Seminar - Moscow, June Dmitry Morozov (IHEP, Protvino) 5 Russian Institutions Contribution Plan to participate in construction of: 1.PbWO 4 barrel EMC IHEP (jointly with KI) 2.Forward Shashlyk EMC IHEP 3.Forward MVD IHEP (jointly with MSU, PTI) 4.Muon System JINR 5.DIRC Detector JINR 6.Superconducting Solenoid Yoke JINR 7.Forward TOF PNPI 8.Pellet Target ITEP and MPEI Besides: 9.Monte-Carlo and Physics All institutions 10.Barrel TOF IHEP and JINR

1st FRRC International Seminar - Moscow, June Dmitry Morozov (IHEP, Protvino) 6 Barrel EMC (IHEP, KI) PANDA physics program relies heavily on the capability to measure photons with excellent energy and position resolution. For this purpose PANDA has proposed to employ a compact calorimeter around the target based on lead tungstate crystals PbWO 4 crystals: high density, small X 0, fast signal and good radiation hardness Barrel consists of PWO crystals Registration of photons within energy range 10 MeV – 10 GeV New crystals PWO-II with doubled light yield are developed Working T 0 is dicreased to C → 3 times more light

1st FRRC International Seminar - Moscow, June Dmitry Morozov (IHEP, Protvino) 7 PWO Energy Resolution PMT readout with 3x3 matrix

1st FRRC International Seminar - Moscow, June Dmitry Morozov (IHEP, Protvino) 8 PWO experience More then 15 years ago lead tangstate was used at IHEP for the first time as a material for calorimetry IHEP collected large experience in PWO-crystals properties studies and electromagnetic calorimeters building for CMS, PRIMEX and BTeV. IHEP published more then 20 NIM articles on PWO-crystal and PWO-based calorimeters. During several last years IHEP is strongly collaborate with KI who is constructing ALICE calorimeter IHEP performs studies on the radiation hardness of PWO- crystals using world-unique setup with continuous control during irradiation with the goal to improve the technology of radiation hard crystal growing. KI has equipment to measure the optic properties and light yield of the crystals

1st FRRC International Seminar - Moscow, June Dmitry Morozov (IHEP, Protvino) 9 PWO production BCTP plant in Bogoroditsk (Russia) is the only mass producer of the PWO crystals – more then crystals has been produced for CMS Crucial point: “In case of the absence of the clear prospects to start mass production of the lead tungstate crystals for PANDA at the beginning of 2009 the head Company will require reprofiling of the BTCP to another product, not necessary single crystal” “In the inactivity period we will lose the key experts of the staff personnel and it will be practically impossible to collect them back to BTCP. Moreover, the running cost of the BTCP due to inactivity will be accounted in the further production cost and will increase price”

1st FRRC International Seminar - Moscow, June Dmitry Morozov (IHEP, Protvino) 10 Forward Shashlyk EMC (IHEP) The measurement of energy resolution of the electromagnetic calorimeter prototype of fine-sampling type have been carried out at the IHEP test beam facility at the Protvino 70 GeV accelerator Prototype module parameters:  Lead plate thickness: mm  Scintillator plate thickness: 1.5 mm  Number of layers: 380  Module size: 110 × 110 × 675 mm 3 All modules are (and will be) produced at IHEP scintillator work shop In PANDA: FEMC – rectangular marix 13х27 (26х54) – 351 (1404) modules. Cell size 11х11 cm (5.5х5.5 cm). Active area of the detector - 4 м 2. The weight of detector - about 15 tons

1st FRRC International Seminar - Moscow, June Dmitry Morozov (IHEP, Protvino) 11 Shashlyk modules produced at IHEP

1st FRRC International Seminar - Moscow, June Dmitry Morozov (IHEP, Protvino) 12 Prototype Energy Resolution Fit by the function: Experimental data: a = 3.5 ± 0.3 b = 2.8 ± 0.2 c = 1.30 ± 0.04 MC: a = 3.3 ± 0.1 b = 3.1 ± 0.1 c = 1.23 ± 0.02

1st FRRC International Seminar - Moscow, June Dmitry Morozov (IHEP, Protvino) 13 Forward MVD (IHEP, MSU, PTI) Is intended to define mainly vertices of charm particle decays 8 Silicon single-side disks of 8.9 cm diameter Production of Silicon sensors is supposed to be at ELMA Company in Zelenogad (Moscow) Sensor thickness should be about 200 microns (ELMA can produce 300 microns without any problem, working on now on 250 and then 200 microns) Quality control of sensors at IHEP and MSU (with a help of PTI) Mechanical support design and production at IHEP

1st FRRC International Seminar - Moscow, June Dmitry Morozov (IHEP, Protvino) 14 “Bird-view” of timescale Detectors and components production in Russia: 2009 – 2012 Transportation of the detectors and components to FAIR 2012 – 2013 Installation in Darmstadt, tests, integration to PANDA, commissioning 2013 – 2015
