How to Use the UTAR Library Catalogue

This session will show you briefly how to use the catalogue to search for your resources

What is a catalogue?  Tool to help you What is it for?  To find what is available  To locate what is available

Where to start If you have a Reading List or Recommended Reading, start with that. ?

Author SearchIf you know the name of person/ persons who wrote it Title SearchIf you know the name of the book/ what it is called

Search Tips Don’t key in David Spark Spark, d Don’t key in capital letters, punctuations or accent marks Don’t key in articles (a, an, the)

What to do if you do not have a reading list or have no clue to what materials to refer to Do a keyword search

Keyword Search: e.g. physics (find any book with these words in the title) physics Database: UTAR

LC = Library of Congress Book title: AS & A level physics through diagrams Author: Pople, Stephen Call Number: QC32.P The first line describes the subject of the book. QC32= Physic textbook 2. The second line often represents the author's surname and cutter number – P The last line indicates the date of publication. QC32.P Anatomy of A LC Call Number

Where is it on the shelf? QC32.P Write down the call number and the location: Open Shelf, Reference, Red-spot, etc QC32 – Physic textbook P668 – Surname and cutter number year of pub.

Subject Search A subject search can be a useful approach when you do not have a specific author or title in mind but you have a general idea of the topic you would like to research. For example, type in “pollution" and then click on the search box for "SUBJECT”.
