Summary of ABS/CBS Test Track Performance George Soodoo NHTSA Rulemaking

ABS/CBS Performance Testing Purpose: To evaluate improvement in stopping distance performance with ABS and CBS technologies compared with conventional brakes Testing conducted –DRI in Bakersfield, CA in 2008 Tested motorcycles in different configurations: –Conventional –ABS –CBS –ABS/CBS Test conditions: Dry asphalt, Wet asphalt, Straight line stops, Hand lever only, Foot pedal only, Both controls together, ABS “on” and ABS “off”

Motorcycles Tested Motorcycles tested –2007 Yamaha FJR1300 with ABS/CBS –2005 Yamaha FJR 1300 with ABS –2006 Honda VFR800 with ABS/CBS –2006 Honda VFR800 with CBS Yamaha: 4 configurations tested Honda: 4 configurations tested One expert rider and six non-expert riders

Summary/Conclusions of ABS/CBS Performance Testing Both the expert rider and non-expert riders in many cases outperformed ABS using single brake lever/pedal in rider best effort stops However, with both brakes applied, ABS stops were more repeatable and shorter than non-ABS stops Increased rider workload in applying both brakes at the limit resulted in less repeatability and longer stops without ABS CBS stops were shorter than conventional brakes for single brake control applied Agency plans to place Report in Docket in the next few weeks
