American Imperialism In The Philippines Liam McAdams, Crysta Davidson, & Natalie Tapia

U.S. Involvement in Pacific Imperialism America first involved during the Spanish – American War The U.S. declared war and surprised Spain by easily conquering the Philippines After the war, the U.S. bought the Philippines from Spain for $20 million

Motives Wanted to expand foreign trade –Economic benefits, new markets –Control of the Philippines opened western trade routes to China Also a strategic naval base

Justifications Thought Filipinos could not control the market on their own Presumed granting the Philippines independence would be irresponsible “unfit for self-government” –Believed only solution was to educate, uplift, and Christianize the Filipinos –Manifest Destiny (religiously) Returning island to Spain would be “cowardly and dishonorable” – McKinley –Annexation – only viable option

? Superman or Mafia Don ? Mafia Don First promised to grant independence, however, decided that the Philippines were unfit to govern themselves After the U.S. decided to annex the islands, rebellion and war arose –Terrible conditions Poor sanitation, starvation, and racism

Aftermath U.S. contact in the Philippines was poor at first, however after the Philippine – American War the U.S. cleaned up and actually benefited the islands America set up a stable government like the Cuban government –Taft was appointed Governor by McKinley

Aftermath Taft set up a program in which college graduates taught Filipino teachers how to teach Attendance in elementary schools increased from 5,000 to over 1 million from 1898 to 1920 In the end –The Philippines were helped, however, the journey was severe and slow –Main U.S. actions were for self benefit much like a Mafia Don
