Barren County School District 2002 Cheryl Vedoe President, PowerSchool In 2006: 50% of all jobs will be in the technology sector. Employees in the technology sector will make 78% more money than employees in other sectors. There will be 500,000 technology jobs unfilled. Therefore, we must pay attention to 21st Century skills of literacy, numeracy, problem solving, collaborating, analyzing data, visualizing, creating, leading, and inspiring.

Barren County School District 2002 Technology's impact can be found in four areas: Sense of Self 21 st Century Literacy Technology Proficiency Basic Skills

Barren County School District 2002 Lessons learned Establish shared goals about student achievement (not just about technology) Ensure innovative school and district leadership to make significant progress. Provide major amount of PD for teachers (many days, many years). Provide students with routine access to technology to support the educational goals. Align technology with curriculum, instruction, and assessment.

Barren County School District 2002 STLP in this MIX STLP can be the driving force which aligns technology to curriculum, instruction, and assessment. Involvement in STLP will inspire our students to become technology learners, leaders, and pioneers as they assist classroom teachers in understanding how technology can enhance learning.

Barren County School District 2002 Old vs New STLP was an add-on program. Teachers worked extra hours to provide an opportunity for student involvement. Limited to a select group of students. Program was not fully implemented because of a lack of time. STLP is integrated into the classroom. Projects come from curriculum. Students are rewarded for what they do with technology. Leaders become managers and organizers. Participation is available to every student equally.

Barren County School District 2002 Brief Summary of Program Students… become a member of STLP at any age once they have participated in technology projects within the classroom. Membership application. sign a Declaration of Intent (commitment) when they decide to work towards the 4 STLP levels. Strive to achieve highest STLP level. Keep an electronic portfolio depicting their completed projects.

Barren County School District 2002 STLP Levels STL (Student Technology Learner) STLs are the new breed of the STLP program. They are learning how to use technology and why technology can benefit them in learning. These students are beginning to utilize technology programs in the classroom and for projects throughout the school and community.

Barren County School District 2002 STLP Levels Techster (Technology System Management) Techsters are students who have advanced in their ability and are learning the internal parts of the computer system itself. These students are learning how to manage, maintain, repair, and install the computer systems and software.

Barren County School District 2002 STLP Levels Leader (Leading the way for other students to use and understand technology) Leaders use their knowledge of technology programs and software to demonstrate and instruct other students, teachers, parents, and community members in proper uses of programs, and system management. These students are developing their presentation skills, public speaking skills, and public relations skills while educating others in technology.

Barren County School District 2002 STLP Levels Pioneer (Discovers and promotes new ways to make technology a part of learning for all) Pioneers are always looking for new emerging technologies and accepting the challenges of developing innovative ways of utilizing technology in the education world. Students develop, design, and implement technology that initiates the movement of the entire school district to a higher level.

Barren County School District 2002 Students will progress towards the Pioneer level throughout their educational progress in Barren County Schools.

Barren County School District 2002 Process Membership Letter of Intent Application for Level certification –STL Application –Techster Application –Leader Application –Pioneer Application

Barren County School District 2002 Technology Projects We are always looking for technology projects with a tie to the curriculum, so why not have students, and teachers submit outstanding technology activities as STLP projects.

Barren County School District 2002 Tying STLP projects with classrooms will promote: Technology Integration by teachers Collaboration between STLP students and teachers and a resource and training support between TRT’s, Help Desks, Teachers, Administrators, Community and Businesses. This is also in line with teacher and student technology standards.

Barren County School District 2002 What We Are Asking Administrators: Realize the impact that technology has and will continue to have on student learning. Stress to their staff, the benefits that are gained through integrating technology into all subject areas. Be aware of what STLP is and how to be a part of it.

Barren County School District 2002 What We Are Asking Teachers: Realize the importance of integrating technology into their curriculum. Promote STLP to their students. Guide interested students to work toward the Pioneer level of STLP. Encourage all students to share & explore technology in the learning environment.

Barren County School District 2002 What are we asking the STLP Coordinator? Keep STLP fresh in the minds of the teachers and staff of your school. Encourage teachers to have exceptional technology projects submitted for STLP recognition. Explore the many ways to encourage students to implement technology to its fullest.

Barren County School District 2002 Let’s work together to take technology and learning to a new level— one that is available to EVERY student in Barren County.
