Electricity Activities KS1 Education & Cultural Services Department Starter Activities (Year 1or 2) L1 – To be able to identify and name common household objects that use electricity L2 - To be able to sort objects and give scientific reason for selection -Post-its on head game- picture of an object which runs on electricity on forehead, has to ask q’s to guess. Yes/No game. - Electric source hunt – sort into mains and battery powered – extension by type of battery

Electricity Activities KS1 Education & Cultural Services Department Electricity Flows In A Complete Circuit (Y2) L1 – Able to describe what they have seen when a circuit is built L3 - Know that a complete circuit is needed for a bulb to light up -Pass a ball, bulb etc round circle and show comes back. Take a child out and pass round circle. Show gap means break means can’t flow continuously. -Buzz box demonstration of circuit flow etc

Electricity Activities KS1 Education & Cultural Services Department Safety in the Home (Year 1 and 2) L1 – Know the dangers associated with mains electricity L2 - Know about a range of physical phenomena including electricity Silly Billy’s house – introduce the character of Silly Billy who has no idea about electrical safety and needs to be warned about his house before it burns down. Discuss ideas about what is dangerous before the story, and see if any crop up when you read it. Could do in groups or as a whole class. Children could write letters to Silly Billy warning him, or design posters for him to use.

The Amazing Story Of Silly Billy Dear Reader, My son, Silly Billy, is a very silly boy! He has the most dangerous house in England and I’m worried that he might have an accident! Please read about his house and come up with some ideas about how to make it safer! From Mrs.Billy (Silly Billy’s mum) Lounge - Silly Billy has 6 plugs plugged into the socket next to the television. He puts the wires under the carpet so they can’t be seen. Kitchen - Silly Billy puts the kettle on the other side of the room to the plug, so the wire goes along the floor from one side of the room to the other. He keeps forgetting to fix the wires that are broken on the toaster. He often gets toast stuck in the toaster, and uses a metal knife to get the toast out. Bathroom - Silly Billy has a television plugged in next to the bath in his bathroom so he can watch TV in the bath. The wires from the TV trail onto the landing. Bedroom - Silly Billy has an electric fire in his bedroom. It is next to his bed so that it keeps him warm at night, and he leaves it on overnight.
