Policing Hackney - The Borough One of London’s most diverse and vibrant boroughs. More than 100 languages spoken with 170+ places of Worship 53,000 young people under the age of 17 making up over a quarter of the population year olds make up nearly 11% of the population 10 – 17 year old young people were responsible for 28% of all crime Young people are perceived to have committed almost half (49.5%) of all Street Crime Offences.

Policing Hackney – The Borough Majority (about 67%) live in council or housing trust owned properties Hackney has 3 rd lowest employment rate in the country There is a high unemployment rate, particularly amongst year olds 82% of unemployed are not looking for employment (2006 Mori Survey) Young people are more likely to be victims of crime

Highlights of 07 / 08 Best Safer Neighbourhood Team in the MPS (Chatham Ward) Best Volunteer Programme – Start of 2007 we had nil volunteers, now at 49 Leading the MPS in 2007 / 8 on Sanction Detections 30% Successful IPT (CPS working within police station – moved from 27 th in MPS to 2 nd on CJ performance) Leading MPS in Stop and Search hit rate 23% Leads the MPS in 3 year government reduction targets with 32%

Highlights of 07 / 08 Confidence ratings increased from 22% start of 07 to 54% 96% feel safe walking alone in Hackney during the day MPS PAS shows 73% of people feel safe walking alone in Hackney after dark FIU seized £750K of criminals assets (2 nd in the MPS) Op Bantam has seized 27 firearms

Performance Targets for 2008/9 - LAA National Indicators Serious Violence Indicator (NI15) is showing a 26% reduction this PY compared to last however Hackney remains the 4th most victimized Borough in terms of population size within the London Boroughs. Serious Youth Violence (Op Curb definition) is in a 10% reduction PYTD. This definition includes all serious violence as well as any violent crime involving a gun, knife or other sharp instrument where both the perpetrator and victim are aged 10 to 19 years old.
