Brian Horton Strategic Housing Advisor Better Homes: housing for the third age A FRAMEWORK FOR DELIVERING OLDER PEOPLE’S ACCOMMODATION ACROSS KENT AND MEDWAY

One Way… But not the our way!

 Recommendation within the Kent Forum Housing Strategy, which identified housing an ageing population as a key concern for Kent and Medway  The number of people aged over 50 is rising both nationally and a County level putting significant demands on housing and services  We need to ensure that people have the opportunity to choose the right accommodation at the right time  Consistent and positive approach to the development of older people’s accommodation across Kent and Medway and to the delivery of housing information, advice and guidance services for older people  Important that local housing and planning authorities, care providers, health authorities, adult social services, private and public sector developers, Parish Councils, landowners and local communities are all engaged Context

Through this Framework, we will work together to: 1)Develop and maintain a consistent, proportionate and efficient approach to the delivery of older people’s accommodation across Kent and Medway 2) Develop new and innovative ways of facilitating the delivery of older people’s accommodation across Kent 3) Raise awareness and understanding amongst local communities, Parish Councils and Members of older people’s housing needs and how they can be met 4) Ensure that older people can exercise choice in determining their housing options Vision

We will do this by: Working together to overcome any organisational or policy barriers to delivery Developing and adopting commonsense and pragmatic approaches in relation to design, quality and viability in the planning process for older people’s accommodation Working with local communities, Parish Councils and Local Members to highlight the opportunity for older people’s accommodation and demonstrate the benefits it can bring Providing and promoting consistent, high quality information, advice and guidance on the housing options available for older people Delivering the Vision
