Summary of Lessons Learned from Cohort 1 Pilots 4 Stakeholder engagement is critical; open district advisory committee meetings facilitate transparency and trust Timely, comprehensive, and quality training of educators and evaluators must be emphasized Selection of a teaching practice instrument takes time and should include stakeholder input Administrators face capacity challenges Developing measures for non-tested grades and subjects is challenging

Selected Cohort 2 Teacher Evaluation Pilot Participants 5 10 Districts from Cohort 1 10 Districts receiving 1 st round grant awards All 10 districts that participated in the pilot (“Cohort 1”) have chosen to continue their evaluation pilot during the school year Among 49 applications, the top 10 districts were selected to receive grant awards totaling $1 million NJDOE seeking to engage more districts through a 2 nd competitive grant opportunity; Applications due August 30 th Cohort 2 During the school year approximately 25 – 30 districts will be piloting new evaluation systems Districts receiving 2 nd round grant awards Additional qualifying Districts After allocation of all grant funds, un-funded districts with qualifying scores may voluntarily choose to participate in the pilot

Sources of Feedback State Evaluation Pilot Advisory Committee (EPAC) provides recommendations on pilot and statewide implementation Each pilot district convenes District Evaluation Advisory Committee (DEAC) – DEACs meet monthly to discuss pilot challenges, provide feedback about the program – Districts convene one DEAC to cover both teacher and principal evaluation work External evaluator (Rutgers for ) studies pilot activity and provides reports Evaluation Pilot Feedback Outcomes Assess impact of new observation and evaluation protocols Convey best practices and lessons learned for rest of the State Inform proposed regulations for and subsequent school years 9
