SCHOOL IMPROVEMENT MIDLAND HIGH SCHOOL

GOOD NEWS 19 STUDENTS QUALIFIED FOR ME DAYS. To qualify for ME days students must meet or exceed state goals and standards in 3 of 5 subjects –(including math and reading) Reading and Writing Scores are up for the third year in a row. Composite ACT scores are up in core students This years scores were predictable through the use of PLAN. Low income level is the lowest it has been in many years Attendance rate has been consistent.

BAD NEWS Science scores have dropped by 6.9 points Math scores have dropped by 10.2 points Non Core student ACT composite scores have dropped by.5 points No female students exceeded any subjects except writing

ENACT AN ACTION PLAN  Identify the over all plan adopted to improve student performance in the targeted skill.  State the product that will result. I.E. unit of instruction, Lab, writing project, or a series of lessons etc.  Clearly state the steps being taken to develop the product.  Indicates a timeline and strategies.  Identify resources  List best practices

ASSESS  Identifies the assessment to be used to determine if student performance has improved.  Describe the data which will result from the assessment and how it is to be used by the staff

HOW DO WE IMPLEMENT T.E.A.M.S. AT MIDLAND HIGH SCHOOL??

TARGET  Review current data available to professional staff PSAE - (11 th graders) Implemented PLAN (10 th graders)– Implemented EXPLORE – (9 th graders) Implement during This will allow us to track students from Freshman year through junior year. In addition, it will give students 3 full years of experience to an ACT format test prior to taking the PSAE (ACT is part of the PSAE).

ENACT  Develop building goals and a mission statement  3 –4 goals related to building goals  Develop class goals  2-3 goals related to building goals  Instructional practices to be taken to improve student performance.  Examples: Strategies to be implemented to improve skills  Develop a timeline for all goals  Indicate how performance be assessed

ASSESS  Describe what data is being reviewed  What did you conclude from data?

MODIFY  What were the strengths and weaknesses of the plan?  What do we need to do to modify the plan?

PROPOSED BUILDING GOALS  Continue to implement writing across curriculum program  Implement a building-wide writing manual to facilitate the writing program.  Implement EXPLORE test to assess student performance.  Implement a building-wide reading program that utilizes:  Predicting  Inferring  Vocabulary banks  Sequencing  Author’s view point

STAFF RESPONSIBILITIES FOR T.E.A.M.S.  Continue to maintain portfolios  Include reading assignments in portfolios  Writing may be included in test or in class assignments  Staff will be provided with T.E.A.M. binders for portfolios.

COMPARE CURRICULUM MAPS TO OTHER SCHOOLS THAT HAVE DEMONSTRATED EXCELLENCE REVIEW ALL TEXTBOOKS AND COURSE WORK IMPLEMENT NOVEL BASED INSTRUCTION CONTINUE TO IMPLEMENT READING AND WRITING STRATAGIES CONTINUE TO WORK WITH CONSULTANTS CONTINUE TO IMPLEMENT TECHNOLOGY THREE YEARS OF MATH AND SCIENCE

WHAT ABOUT NEXT YEAR CONTINUED Create a remedial reading english class – students not Students not meeting or exceeding state goals and standards will be placed in English I Students at or abovestate goals and standards will be placed in English II Create a remedial science class – Students not meeting or exceeding state goals and standards in Science will be placed in General Science. Students meeting state goals and standards will be placed in Biology – all students will take biology.

We have reached a crossroad The district must be reformed horizontally and vertically Change must occur with the contribution of all participants The board and administration should foster a “family” concept. The family members are: parents, teachers, administration and students.
