T WO E SSENTIAL Q UESTIONS How are we doing in relation to our comparison group? How are we doing over time?

D ISTRICT F ACTOR G ROUP ( DFG) DFG – no longer used The DFG was based on population density, the percent of individuals in poverty, as well as residents’ education level, occupational status, unemployment rate, and median family income. New Jersey had 25 J districts (including Ridgewood, HoHoKus, Northern Highlands, Saddle River, Upper Saddle River, Woodcliff Lake, Millburn, West Windsor-Plainsboro, Rumson – Fair Haven, Mendham, Mountain Lakes)

P EER C OMPARISON G ROUPS Peer School Comparison Groups (as of 2013) This peer methodology incorporates reliable and available data that helps to describe the students in the school as well as other factors such as the grade span of the school. These factors/indicators include: Percent of students that are economically disadvantaged, i.e., free or reduced price lunch eligible (%), Percent of students that are limited English proficient (%), Percent of students that are in special education (%), Grade span of the school (elementary, middle, high or vocational high school). The peer methodology system uses “propensity score matching” to establish the peer groups for each eligible school. Propensity score matching is an established statistical technique that helps to construct comparison groups from data observed outside of an experiment.

S O W HO U SES W HAT ? State Test Analysis In our District Test Report, we will use the DFG. Information on the DFG has been part of the score analysis for the NJ ASK, HSPA, and other mandated tests, since their inception. School Performance Reports The School Performance Reports are the only ones to use the new Comparison Groups. There has been no discussion to date as to how and when the PARCC data will be used with regard to the Comparison Groups.
