4 And coming to Him as to a living stone which has been rejected by men, but is choice and precious in the sight of God, 5 you also, as living stones, are being built up as a spiritual house for a holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. 6 For this is contained in Scripture: “Behold, I lay in Zion a choice stone, a precious corner stone, and he who believes in him will not be disappointed." 7 This precious value, then, is for you who believe; but for those who disbelieve, “The stone which the builders rejected, this became the very corner stone," 8 and, “A stone of stumbling and a rock of offense"; for they stumble because they are disobedient to the word, and to this doom they were also appointed. 9 But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for God's own possession, so that you may proclaim the excellencies of Him who has called you out of darkness into His marvelous light; 10 for you once were not a people, but now you are the people of god; you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy.

Who is the “living stone”? What happened to the “living stone”? What was God’s estimations of the “living stone”? Who are the “living stones”? What is God doing with “the living stones”? Review from last week

Christ Jesus (the corner stone) spiritual house (being built) apostles & prophets (doctrine) Ephesians 2:20 having been built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Christ Jesus Himself being the corner stone, 1 Peter 2:5 you also, as living stones, are being built up as a spiritual house for a holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. * McCalley The foundation of the “spiritual house” in 1 Peter 2:6-8 *

6 For this is contained in Scripture: “Behold, I lay in Zion a choice stone, a precious corner stone, and he who believes in him will not be disappointed." For this is contained in Scripture Lit: because it stands in Scripture Behold, I lay in Zion (see Isa. 28:16, Rom 9:32-33, Rom10:11) lay - tithēmi - to put, place, set Zion – a Jebusite fortress captured by David " Zion" here refers to the heavenly Jerusalem see Rom 11:26-27, Heb 12:22-24 for other examples

6 For this is contained in Scripture: “Behold, I lay in Zion a choice stone, a precious corner stone, and he who believes in him will not be disappointed." a choice stone, a precious corner stone lit: a corner stone, chosen, precious also note the picture of the rock for Christ in scripture Exodus 17:6 "Behold, I will stand before you there on the rock at Horeb; and you shall strike the rock, and water will come out of it, that the people may drink." Corinthians 10:2 and all were baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea; 3 and all ate the same spiritual food; 4 and all drank the same spiritual drink, for they were drinking from a spiritual rock which followed them; and the rock was Christ.

6 For this is contained in Scripture: “Behold, I lay in Zion a choice stone, a precious corner stone, and he who believes in him will not be disappointed." Three aspects of the “living stone” – Jesus Christ corner (stone) - akrogōniaios - "a chief corner-stone" (from akros, "highest, extreme,“ gōnia, "a corner, angle") - see Eph 2:20 chosen (stone) – eklektos - select, choice, elect 1 Peter 2:4 and 1 John 4:14 precious (stone) - entimos - honored, estimable, dear, costly - see 1 Peter 2:4

6 For this is contained in Scripture: “Behold, I lay in Zion a choice stone, a precious corner stone, and he who believes in him will not be disappointed." he who believes in him the one who rests his faith on Him (Wuest) will not be disappointed disappointed - to frustrate one's hope – see Rom 5:5; or put to shame - see 1 Peter 3:16 passive voice shall positively not be disappointed (Wuest)

7 This precious value, then, is for you who believe; but for those who disbelieve, “The stone which the builders rejected, this became the very corner stone," This precious value, then, is for you who believe Lit: the preciousness of the stone is for you who believe preciousness - honor, respect, reverence, esteem see 1 Tim 6:16, Heb 3:3 Evidently Peter is showing the contrast between what the Living Stone means to believers and what He becomes to the unbelievers because they refuse to allow Him to become precious to them. - Wuest

7 This precious value, then, is for you who believe; but for those who disbelieve, “The stone which the builders rejected, this became the very corner stone," but for those who “disbelieve” now we are given the contrast! The stone which “the builders” rejected, Who are the builders? see Acts 4:8-11 also consider who rejected Christ rejected - "to reject" as the result of examination and disapproval see Mark 12:10, Luke 9:22

7c this became the very corner stone," 8a and, “A stone of stumbling and a rock of offense"; this became the very corner stone, Lit: this one became the head of the corner a stone of stumbling and a rock of offense Lit: a stone for stumbling over and a rock for falling over stumbling - an obstacle against which one may dash his foot falling over (offense) – trap or snare “of anything that arouses prejudice, or becomes a hindrance to others, or causes them to fall by the way” Vine

8b for they stumble because they are disobedient to the word, and to this doom they were also appointed. for they stumble because they are disobedient to the word Who is they ? see 1 Cor. 1:23, Rom 9:32 disobedient - to refuse to be persuaded, to refuse belief – see Acts 14:2, 1 Peter 3:1 & 20 so then what does “disobedient to word” mean?

8b for they stumble because they are disobedient to the word, and to this doom they were also appointed. and to this doom they were also appointed Lit: to which they were indeed appointed to what does God appoint those who stumbled, unbelief or the stumbling that results from unbelief? Constable
