Chapter 3 – Bible Background. What is the Bible? The Bible is a collection of sacred books which Jews and Christians believe were written under God’s inspiration; it tells who Jews and Christians believe God is. What is the Bible? What are the Scriptures? Scriptures refers to sacred writings that are contained in the Bible. The Old Testament Hebrew Scriptures,

and the New Testament, Christian Scriptures.

God inspired the writers of the bible through the power of the Holy Spirit. These scriptures or writings are the inspired word of God.

When did human authors compose these writings? Human authors composed these writings at different times and for different audiences. Inspired by God, human authors, writing with divine authority, use their own writing styles. Human authors composed these writings at different times and for different audiences. Old Testament writings include… Poetry and songs like the Psalms and the Song of Solomon. Origin stories like the story of Adam and Eve and creation are also found in the Old Testament.

The New Testament includes The Gospels:

The Gospel according to Mark… Mark was the first Gospel written down.

The Gospel according to St. Luke Luke was also a physician and also is said to have written the Acts of the Apostles.

The Gospel According to St. John.

What is the goal of studying the Bible? The goal of studying the bible is not simply to learn about Scripture, but to learn from Scripture. To get to know Jesus better. To understand more about God.
