PURPOSE OF HEALTH PROFESSIONAL SHORTAGE AREAS (HPSA) AND MEDICALLY UNDERSERVED AREAS (MUA) DESIGNATIONS To identify areas of greatest need of health services To ensure limited resources can be prioritized and directed to the people in those areas

SHORTAGE DESIGNATION BRANCH Develops and implements criteria and procedures for designations of areas and populations of the underserved Works closely with the PCO (Primary Care Office) from each state to identify these areas and populations

HPSA CRITERIA For: Primary Care, Dental and Mental Health Rational Service Area Population-to-Provider Ratio Percent of population ≤ 100% Poverty Percent Population ≥ 65 Primary Care Physicians per 1,000 population Infant Mortality Rate Index of Medical Underservice (weighted sum of above components) Population groups also designatable

HPSAS OF GREATEST NEED AND HPSA SCORES HPSA scores determine HPSA’s of greatest need. A higher score = greater need. HPSA scores determine priority for National Health Service Corps (NHSC) scholarship vacancies Cut off scores are determined by NHSC for each discipline/specialty; no more then 2 scholar vacancies. HPSA scores determine priority for NHSC loan repayment funding and J1s
