Taoism (Daoism) Presentation by Tyler Gantala and Ali Goza
Origin Created in c 550 B.C.E Emerged from a rich shamanic tradition in China. The first followers were mainly healers and prophets. No one definite creator- Lao Tzu, an adviser to the royal court, is greatly credited to Taoism but not fully responsible for it. “Tao” means “the Way”
Beliefs 1.Being natural and peaceful 2.Death is natural, return to the Tao 3.Health and healing are ways to gain longer life or even immortality 4.Medical practices like T’ai chi and Quigong can create longer lives 5.Tao is everywhere (especially in nature)
Religion Structure ●Taoism is an ethnic religion due to being created in centered in China ●And is an autonomous religion because it has no leader or hierarchy
Distribution Taoism is distributed throughout China, United States, Canada, Malaysia and Taiwan
Diffusion From 618 to 1644 Taoism was encouraged by the royal family in China but did not diffuse out of China until around 1900 due to more people beginning to migrate to the U.S.
