Objectives: Examine Biblical keys for teaching Examine Bible examples that will help in dealing with rejection and ridicule 2 Timothy 2:23-26

The Lord’s Servant (2 Timothy 2:23-26) Avoids foolish and unlearned questions Does not strive Is gentle unto all men Is apt to teach Is patient Instructs in meekness

The Lord’s Servant (2 Timothy 2:23-26) Speaks the word of God! “In meekness instructing those that oppose themselves; if God peradventure will give them repentance to the acknowledging of the truth” (2 Timothy 2:25)

The Lord’s Servant (2 Timothy 2:23-26) Avoids foolish and unlearned questions Does not strive Is gentle unto all men Is apt to teach Is patient Instructs in meekness

The Lord’s Servant Avoids Foolish and Unlearned Questions Mark 11:30-31 – Is it from heaven or men? Romans 10:17, 2 Corinthians 4:13 – The spirit of faith believes and speaks what is revealed in the word of God. Deuteronomy 29:29 – The things which are revealed belong to us. – The secret things belong to God. What is revealed is important.

The Lord’s Servant Avoids Foolish and Unlearned Questions Matthew 22:23-32 – Jesus’ handling of the Sadducees’ question “whose wife will she be” in Matthew 22:28. Jesus rejected their question. “Ye do err, not knowing the scriptures, nor the power of God.” (Matthew 22:29) Jesus taught the Sadducees that Abraham, Isaac and Jacob were still alive! (Matthew 22:32, Exodus 3:6) An “unlearned question” gives us opportunity to steer the discussion and redirect someone to what IS revealed. “The Bible does not address that topic, but the Bible does teach...”

The Lord’s Servant (2 Timothy 2:23-26) Avoids foolish and unlearned questions Does not strive Is gentle unto all men Is apt to teach Is patient Instructs in meekness

The Lord’s Servant Does Not Strive Does not: – Brawl Titus 3:2 – Bite and devour Galatians 5:15 – Fight and war James 4:2 We should earnestly contend without strife – Jude 3 – Acts 17:2-3, 16-17

The Lord’s Servant (2 Tim 2:23-26) Avoids foolish and unlearned questions Does not strive Is gentle unto all men Is apt to teach Is patient Instructs in meekness

The Lord’s Servant Is Gentle Unto All Men James 3:17 – Gentleness reveals wisdom from above Titus 3:2-3 – Gentleness remembers what God has done for us Philippians 4:5 – Who should not be gentle knowing that the Lord is watching nearby?

The Lord’s Servant (2 Timothy 2:23-26) Avoids foolish and unlearned questions Does not strive Is gentle unto all men Is apt to teach Is patient Instructs in meekness

The Lord’s Servant Is Apt to Teach Ezra 7:10 – Ezra prepared his heart to seek the law. Teachers should be “apt to learn” (2 Timothy 2:15) – Apollos (Acts 18:24-26) – God’s judgment of us is what matters. (1 Corinthians 4:3-5) – Noble men checked even Paul (Acts 17:11) – Am I a better man than Apollos or Paul?

The Lord’s Servant Is Apt to Teach Ezra 7:10 – Ezra sought to do the law. We should purge our lives of dishonorable conduct (2 Timothy 2:21) – Ezra taught the law (2 Timothy 2:2) Remember 2 Timothy 2:15 and Ezra 7:10

The Lord’s Servant (2 Timothy 2:23-26) Avoids foolish and unlearned questions Does not strive Is gentle unto all men Is apt to teach Is patient Instructs in meekness

The Lord’s Servant Is Patient Hebrews 5:12 – We are responsible to God to teach others Romans 1:16 – The power is in the gospel, not in us – Let God give the increase (1 Corinthians 3:6) – Others are not rejecting you (John 12:48) Matthew 7:7 – If someone is seeking God, they will find Him. Perhaps God will use us to reach them (2 Timothy 2:21).

The Lord’s Servant (2 Timothy 2:23-26) Avoids foolish and unlearned questions Does not strive Is gentle unto all men Is apt to teach Is patient Instructs in meekness

The Lord’s Servant Instructs in Meekness The proper disposition toward others comes from understanding: What God has done for us (Titus 3:2-3) That we can be tempted (Galatians 6:1) That we can be lost (1 Corinthians 9:27)

The Lord’s Servant Desires That Others Be Saved 2 Timothy 2:25-26 – “If God peradventure will give them repentance...” – A counter example (Jonah 4:1) Acts 8:23 – We want to help others break free from Satan

Objectives: Examine Biblical keys for teaching Examine Bible examples that will help in dealing with rejection and ridicule

Examples Romans 15:4 – Give us comfort and hope Hebrews 12:1 – Motivate us to run with patience

Examples - Jesus 1 Peter 2:21-23 – He was reviled, but did not revile – He suffered, but did not threaten – Jesus committed himself to Him that judges rightly Hebrews 12:2-3 – Looked past the suffering – Endured the cross – Despised the shame – Consider him

Examples – The Apostles 1 Corinthians 4:12-13 – Reviled, we bless – Persecuted, we suffer it – Defamed, we entreat – Made as the filth of the world – Are the offscouring of all things

Examples – The Apostles 1 Peter 3:9 – Not rendering evil for evil or railing for railing – But blessing I Peter 4:14-16 – If you are reproached for the name of Christ, happy are you (Acts 5:41) – If you suffer as a Christian, don’t be ashamed, but glorify God

“And the things that thou hast heard of me among many witnesses, the same commit thou to faithful men, who shall be able to teach others also. Thou therefore endure hardness, as a good soldier of Jesus Christ.” 2 Timothy 2:2-3
