Revelation & Inspiration Kevin Peck
Epistemology of Discovery Truth is discovered by natural human senses and logic I believe my senses are reliable, so I can discover truth If I judge the weight of my measured discoveries to be true, then it is true What I (or other men of discovery) say is true is truth
Epistemology of Revelation Truth is revealed by God to man I believe God can make His revelation understandable to man God has revealed Himself to me in Christ through His Word What God says in His Word is true
PROCESSING QUESTION Why do you think you have separated KNOWING God from LOVING God?
PSALM 19:1-2 “The heavens are telling of the glory of God; And their expanse is declaring the work of His hands. Day to day pours forth speech, And night to night reveals knowledge.” (Psalm 19:1–2, NASB95)
ROMANS 1:18-23 “For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men who suppress the truth in unrighteousness, because that which is known about God is evident within them; for God made it evident to them. For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes, His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly seen, being understood through what has been made, so that they are without excuse. For even though they knew God, they did not honor Him as God or give thanks, but they became futile in their speculations, and their foolish heart was darkened. Professing to be wise, they became fools, and exchanged the glory of the incorruptible God for an image in the form of corruptible man and of birds and four-footed animals and crawling creatures.” (Romans 1:18–23, NASB95)
MATTHEW 16:13-17 “Now when Jesus came into the district of Caesarea Philippi, He was asking His disciples, “Who do people say that the Son of Man is?” And they said, “Some say John the Baptist; and others, Elijah; but still others, Jeremiah, or one of the prophets.” He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?” Simon Peter answered, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” And Jesus said to him, “Blessed are you, Simon Barjona, because flesh and blood did not reveal this to you, but My Father who is in heaven.” (Matthew 16:13–17, NASB95)
LUKE 10:21 “At that very time He rejoiced greatly in the Holy Spirit, and said, “I praise You, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that You have hidden these things from the wise and intelligent and have revealed them to infants. Yes, Father, for this way was well-pleasing in Your sight.” (Luke 10:21, NASB95)
COLOSSIANS 1:3-6 “We give thanks to God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, praying always for you, since we heard of your faith in Christ Jesus and the love which you have for all the saints; because of the hope laid up for you in heaven, of which you previously heard in the word of truth, the gospel which has come to you, just as in all the world also it is constantly bearing fruit and increasing, even as it has been doing in you also since the day you heard of it and understood the grace of God in truth.” (Colossians 1:3-6, NASB)
JOHN 10:14-18 I am the good shepherd. I know my own and my own know me, just as the Father knows me and I know the Father; and I lay down my life for the sheep. And I have other sheep that are not of this fold. I must bring them also, and they will listen to my voice. So there will be one flock, one shepherd. For this reason the Father loves me, because I lay down my life that I may take it up again. No one takes it from me, but I lay it down of my own accord. I have authority to lay it down, and I have authority to take it up again. This charge I have received from my Father.” (John 10:14-18)
JOHN 10:24-30 So the Jews gathered around him and said to him, “How long will you keep us in suspense? If you are the Christ, tell us plainly.” Jesus answered them, “I told you, and you do not believe. The works that I do in my Father's name bear witness about me, but you do not believe because you are not among my sheep. My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me. I give them eternal life, and they will never perish, and no one will snatch them out of my hand. My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all, and no one is able to snatch them out of the Father's hand. I and the Father are one.” (John 10:24-30)
PROCESSING QUESTION What have you believed other than God's Word as the source of truth?
Natural (General) Revelation MODE - Creation (Romans 1:18) and Conscience (Romans 2:15) SCOPE - Generally to everyone It says something of God, but we can’t absolutely discern what it says (except when interpreted in light of special revelation) CONTENT - EFFICACY - Natural revelation is enough for people to understand they are in rebellion and damned
special Revelation MODE - Personal encounter, mighty acts, proposition (purposes, promise, story - in words), incarnation SCOPE - Specific time, specific person, specific place (e.g. parting of the Red Sea) CONTENT - The fullness of His nature and grace toward man in Christ, specific knowledge about who God is EFFICACY - Greater salvation or greater condemnation
Inspiration Inerrancy Clarity Necessity Authority Canonicity Sufficiency
