 We pray when we are not willing to turn loose of our sin.

Psalms 66:18 – “If I regard iniquity in my heart, the Lord will not hear me”

 We pray when there is idolatry in our hearts.

Ezekiel 14:3 – “ Son of man, these men have set up their idols in their heart, and put the stumblingblock of their iniquity before their face: should I be enquired of at all by them?”

 We pray when we are bitter.

Mark 11:25(a) – “And when ye stand praying, forgive, if ye have ought against any:…”

James 5:16 – “Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much.”

 We pray at times out of selfish desire.

James 4:1-3 – “From whence come wars and fightings among you? come they not hence, even of your lusts that war in your members? Ye lust, and have not: ye kill, and desire to have, and cannot obtain: ye fight and war, yet ye have not, because ye ask not. Ye ask, and receive not, because ye ask amiss, that ye may consume it upon your lusts.”

 We have religious activity but no reality.

Matthew 6:7 – “But when ye pray, use not vain repetitions, as the heathen do: for they think that they shall be heard for their much speaking.”

Do I have a real relationship with God? Is He really inside my life? Am I really His child? Am I in contact with God? Am I just going through the motions? Have I set some idol up in my heart? Am I harboring some bad attitude or sin? Am I praying this so it will benefit me or am I praying this because it has potential to glorify God?

1 Peter 2:5 – “Ye also, as lively stones, are built up a spiritual house, an holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices, acceptable to God by Jesus Christ.”

1 Peter 2:9 – “But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light”
