The Citadel 2008 Honor Committee Sophomore Honor Training Honor 3-2 Honor In Everyday Life Prepared by the 2008 Honor Committee

2008 Honor Committee Agenda A Time for Honor A Time for Honor Guided Discussion Guided Discussion Case Studies Case Studies

2008 Honor Committee A Time for Honor If The Citadel is in session – the Honor Code is in effect If The Citadel is in session – the Honor Code is in effect Also in effect over Christmas and Spring Breaks Also in effect over Christmas and Spring Breaks Spirit of the Code is always in effect Spirit of the Code is always in effect What is the ‘spirit of the code?’ What is the ‘spirit of the code?’

2008 Honor Committee Guided Discussion 1. What does the word Honor mean to you? 2. Why is it important for The Citadel to have an Honor Code/System? 3. What do you get out of the Honor System? 4. What pressures, at The Citadel or outside, exist to act dishonorably? 5. In what areas of college life do people act dishonorably (At The Citadel or outside)?

2008 Honor Committee Case Study Disclaimer Some of these case studies actually occurred and resulted in Honor Trials, others are hypothetical. As a class, decide if you think the event would constitute an Honor Violation. If it is, explain why. If it isn’t, explain why not. There is no right or wrong answer presented. This is an exercise to get you to think about your everyday actions

2008 Honor Committee Case Study 1 Mark, a cadet in X Company, is really nervous about his Western Civilization final exam. He has studied a great deal, but the information is simply not ‘clicking’. Discouraged, Mark lightly pencils in some definitions into the inside cover of his Blue Book. Sitting at his desk Mark begins to worry about whether he is doing the right thing. The teacher asks the class to clear their desks and Mark then decides he cannot follow through with his plan. He takes one last look at the definitions and then erases them. After this he proceeds to take the exam.

2008 Honor Committee Case Study 1 Questions Do you think that this is an HV? Do you think that this is an HV? Discuss Mark’s motives Discuss Mark’s motives Did Mark do the right thing or the wrong thing? Did Mark do the right thing or the wrong thing? Spirit of the Code? Spirit of the Code? What should Mark have done differently? What should Mark have done differently?

2008 Honor Committee Case Study 2 Jennifer, a cadet in X Company, has been up all night studying and finishing up some projects for her Chemistry class, which is at 13:00. Her only class before that is Accounting – which she really doesn’t like. This class is first thing in the morning, 8:00. Jennifer makes the decision to skip Accounting so she can get a few hours of sleep. That afternoon she receives a class absence notification in her . Jennifer accepts this, but sends the following message to her professor which contains a ‘white lie’: Sir, I apologize for not being in class today; however, I was at the library preparing for a big Chemistry test at the time, I need to get a really good grade on it! Sorry for missing Accounting! -Jennifer

2008 Honor Committee Case Study 2 Questions Jennifer is still marked absent and will get the cons – with this considered do you think this is an HV? Jennifer is still marked absent and will get the cons – with this considered do you think this is an HV? What would you have done? What would you have done? Is a ‘white lie’ (aka Social Lie) a dishonorable action? Is a ‘white lie’ (aka Social Lie) a dishonorable action?

2008 Honor Committee Case Study 3 Kyle, a sophomore in X Company, took special leave on the previous weekend to attend a wedding in his hometown. Once he returned he took the slip off of his door and kept it. The following Thursday Kyle’s girlfriend from California was at C of C for a school conference, and had a few free hours at night. Kyle, thinking the TAC officers would never approve such a request, put the old slip on his door knowing the Division Inspector, his friend, would not follow up on it.

2008 Honor Committee Case Study 3 Questions What constitutes an official statement? What constitutes an official statement? What is intent to deceive? What is intent to deceive? What should Kyle have done? What should Kyle have done?

2008 Honor Committee Case Study 4 Amanda, a sophomore from X Company, is sitting guard on a brisk Saturday night. Her boyfriend, Ben, a fellow cadet goes out to Purple Tree Lounge on the same night where he ends up cheating on Amanda. Upon returning to the barracks at 0100 HRS Ben greets Amanda in the front Sallyport. Smelling another girl’s perfume on his uniform she asks whether Ben had been with another girl. Ben says, “No! I would never cheat on you, baby!” His friend Jason throws him under the bus by telling Amanda that Ben did, in fact, cheat on her that night. Amanda pulls Ben for lying to a member of the guard team. WHOA! Did Ben just commit an HV?

2008 Honor Committee Case Study 4 Questions This is a tongue-in-cheek case, but this can actually make you think Is cheating on your boy/girlfriend the honorable thing to do? 2. What is probable cause? 3. Discuss statements to the guard team.
