WE ARE GLAD YOU’RE HERE

History of the Ark: Built to serve as God’s dwelling place (Ex. 25) Taken by the Philistines (1 Sam. 4:11) Returned and remains at Kiriath-Jearim for a long period of time (20 years) (1 Sam. 7:1-2) Obscure mention during the days of Saul (1 Sam. 14) David brings the Ark to Jerusalem. (2 Sam. 6; 1 Chron. 13) – One of the first act Recorded of David as king in 1 Chronicles

A Good Task David didn’t consider that he would be blessed as Saul was for simply being the Lord’s anointed. David desired the presence of God. Signifies David’s righteousness and longing to be with God. – “I was glad when they said to me, let us go to the house of the Lord” Psalm 122:1 – Initiates/proposes the transfer of the ark (1 Chron. 13) Do we have this same kind of desire to be in God’s presence? – A desire to serve God vs. a desire for God to serve us.

Involves Everyone 1 Chron. 13:1-4 While David initiates this, it is “right in the eyes of all the people.” All Israel involved in the actual move as well (vs. 5-6, 8) – All involved and they are giving their all (vs. 8)

A Good task done the wrong way “carried on a new cart…” (vs. 7) How God commanded the ark to be carried (Ex. 25:12-17) How Does God view this???

A Good task done the wrong way God’s Response: – Uzzah Dies (vs. 9-10) – The end doesn’t justify the means – Good intentions alone are not enough – God shows approval of the idea but not the means. It is good to want to do things for the Lord. We must do the right things in the right way. – Worship (2 Chron 29:27-29; Ps. 81:1-2) – Organization – The Work of the Church – The roles we take in worship/service to God

A Good task done the wrong way David’s desire to build the temple (2 Sam. 7) – God tells him he is not the man for the job (vs. 13) – David then makes preparations and does what he can – If he were to continue would he not have been punished? 2 Chron 26:16-21 – Uzziah offers incense – A good task done by the wrong person – Uzziah is punished with leprosy

A Terrible Punishment Uzzah died Uzziah received leprosy An incredible warning provided! Are you wiling to risk your life? Are you willing to risk your soul? Are you willing to risk the souls of others?

David’s Response: 1 Chron 13:11-14 David is angry at the punishment of God – A natural response – (Generally speaking) When punished, the tendency of man is to act defensive, frustrated, angry – David appears no different but he allows these foolish emotions to fade and submits to God’s commands. David fears God – A purpose of punishment (vs. 12)

David’s Response: David Acknowledges their error and tries again (1 Chron 15:1-3, 11-15). – They don’t give up this good task. – This time they carry out the task the way God had commanded. Praise given for service offered (1 Chron 16) – Burnt offerings and peace offerings (vs. 1-3) – Men appointed to praise with music (vs. 4-6) – Psalm of thanksgiving (vs. 8-36) – Continued worship (vs ).
