Chapter 6 Lesson 6 Review

The verbs savoir and connaître The verbs savoir and connaître both mean to know and they’re irregular. savoir (to know) Je saisNous savons Tu saisVous savez Il/elle/on saitIls/elles savent connaître (to know, be familiar with) Je connaisNous connaissons Tu connaisVous connaissez Il/elle/on connaîtIls/elles connaissent

The verbs savoir and connaître Savoir means to know, as in to know information or a fact or to know how to do something. Je sais la date!Il sait faire du ski. I know the date!He knows how to ski. Connaître means to know as in to be familiar with a person or a place. Tu connais Jacques? Do you know Jacques? Je connais ce restaurant. I’m familiar with this restaurant.

The verbs savoir and connaître The past participle of savoir is su and that if connaître is connu. When used in the passé composé, these verbs can take on a slightly different meaning. –J’ai su la date hier. –I found out the date yesterday. –J’ai connu Luc le mois dernier. –I met Luc (for the first time) last month.

The verb savoir If you want to say “you know that…” use “que”. Je sais que nous sommes dans la classe française. This is only used if you have two subjects in the sentence.

The Imperative To make commands with most French verbs, you use the tu, nous, or vous form of the present tense, without the subject pronoun. Remember to drop the final –s when you’re using the tu form of –er verbs. Écoute ta mère! Finissons nos devoirs! Attendez les profs!
