What You Need To Know Presented by the SBCC Counseling Faculty

A student who has graduated from high school and has completed a regular session at a college or University is considered a transfer student. This does not include the summer following H.S. graduation. What is a Transfer Student?

  University of California System (UC)   California State University System (CSU)   Independent/Private Institutions   Out-of-State Transfer Options?

SBCC 4- YEAR INSTITUTION   Complete the freshman and sophomore university graduation requirements at SBCC:   General Education   Lower division preparation for major   Elective Units and transfer as a junior   This may take 2-3 years depending on the following: Placement in math and English Total units taken each semester Grades earned Completion of lower division preparation for major courses Extra curricular actives: job, athletics, clubs What are the steps to follow?

60 semester/90 quarter UC transferable units At least 2.4 GPA for CA residents (2.8 GPA for nonresidents) Seven course pattern earning a C grade or better in each: Two courses in English composition One course in mathematics, such as college algebra, statistics, or pre-calculus Four courses from among at least two of the following three areas:  Arts and humanities  Behavioral and social sciences  Biological and physical sciences Minimum UC transfer eligibility Being competitive- beyond the minimum Units  60 units by end of spring for fall admission GPA  For most UC’s except Berkeley & UCLA the recommended GPA is at least a 3.2 Major Preparation:  Complete lower division preparation and IGETC (if appropriate) prior to transfer

Admissions requirements vary from institution to institution and by major or program of study. There is no standard set of admission requirements among independent/private college and universities. In addition to setting its own unique admission requirements, each independent/private college or university takes into consideration the talents and academic promise of each individual student.. Minimum Independent/Private Colleges & Universities Transfer Eligibility Requirements Being competitive- beyond the minimum Complete English and Math requirements as early as possible Whenever possible, focus on completing both minimum admission requirements and major preparation course work Complete all courses by end of spring semester prior to transfer in the fall Apply to more than one independent/private campus Be sure to visit the campus of your choice Meet with an Admissions Officer For additional information about independent/private colleges and universities in California, go to

Out-of-state colleges and universities establish their own admission criteria and application procedures. Each has their own admission application, and most of them offer online applications. It is important that students wishing to apply contact the colleges and universities of interest to determine specific requirements and deadlines. What is IGETC? You can use ASSIST to explore the majors available at University of California (UC) and California State University (CSU) campuses.
