COURSE SELECTIONS: A FACTOR IN COLLEGE ACCEPTANCE Ms. Smith March 3, 2010

For Your Information  Each student will meet with the counseling department during PE or Social Studies to make course selections for their schedules for next year  The counselors will help answer any questions you have about selecting courses, BUT please think about your choices before your meeting  Students will be placed in the level of class based on PLAN and ACT scores

GWCP Graduation Requirements For CTC students:  4 credits of English  4 credits of Social Studies  4 credits of Mathematics  4 credits of Science  2 credits of World Language  2 credits of Fine Arts (can select from Art, Music, or Drama, must have 2)  2 credits of Health, Safety and Physical Education  3 credits of Career Education  3 electives  In addition, each student must: pass Driver's Education, pass the Public Law 195 (Constitution) Exam, complete 40 hours of Service Learning, and include consumer education in one of his/her electives.  Totaling 28 credits

GWCP Graduation Requirements For SE students:  4 credits of English  4 credits of Social Studies  4 credits of Mathematics  4 credits of Science  4 credits of World Language  2 credits of Fine Arts (can select from Art, Music, or Drama, must have 2)  2 credits of Health, Safety and Physical Education  2 credits of Career Education or Advanced Academics  2 credits of electives  In addition, each student must: pass Driver's Education, pass the Public Law 195 (Constitution) Exam, complete 40 hours of Service Learning, and include consumer education in one of his/her electives.  Totaling 28 credits

Please Note!  Some of your courses are selected for you based on what you need to graduate and on your standardized test scores  You can select your World Language. However, students currently taking Spanish, Mandarin, or French should take the next level course in the language they are already in  Both SE and CTC students have the opportunity to take Advanced Placement courses

Why is this important?  “Strength of schedule” is something that colleges look at to determine if a student is a good fit for their school. What does this mean?  A’s and B’s and even a very small number of C’s in an Honors and AP course is preferable to having all A’s in all regular level courses  Why? What does this indicate?

How will the classes you take affect where you go to college?

Directions  Please complete your course selection sheets and return to your advisory teacher!  Do not leave with your sheet!
