Revised AE Undergraduate Curriculum AE Student Briefing Fall 2014

Two-Year Process 1.Developed specific educational objectives and outcomes with broad-based input 2.Determined description of who our students become 3.Developed required AE educational experiences for core curriculum and associated mastery levels (master, basic, exposure) 4.Reviewed peer programs against required AE educational experiences; developed strengths/weaknesses 5.Compared present program against required AE educational experiences missing topics/experiences, program rigidity, need for repetition, breadth vs depth 6.Created revised curriculum based on core topics/experiences

Benefits of Revised Curriculum Reduced core subject requirements –pared down existing AE core –more emphasis on material requiring mastery versus exposure level –maintains strong fundamentals that have helped us graduate successful AEs Improves flexibility (specialization, scheduling) Maintains sufficient free elective hours for students to pursue other interests (minors, certificates, research,…) Added emphasis on math skills, technical communications instruction, hands-on and interdisciplinary experiences Early exposure to laboratory experience –students taught to design and conduct experiments, and analyze and interpret data, beginning in the sophomore year More balance between space and air vehicle applications New design methods course as pre-requisite to capstone senior design (aircraft, rotorcraft, or space systems)

New AE Undergraduate Curriculum (Credit Hours) AE Undergraduate Curriculum (61) AE Common Core (41) 16 courses (with 2 “courses” that have separate tracks) AE Options (8) 3 courses from approved list (~10) Math Option (3) 1 course from approved list (~10) Free Electives (9) can count towards minors, certificates, research,… GT/COE “Core” (71) Total Hours (132)

GT/COE Core Unchanged except, 1 hour less of free elec. (9 vs. 10)

Math Option 3 hr Math Option from list

Freshman/Sophomore Courses Intro AE = hands on Intro fluids Integrated lab+comm Same dyn.

Fluids/Propulsion 2010 = fluids and thermo 3030 =aero 4451 nearly same + heat xfer

Structures/Controls 3140 = structural anal + numerics 3530= systems, structural vibrations 3531= controls 4531/32 = air or spacecraft dynamics

Performance/Design 3330=balanced space and air performance 3340= new, design methods 434x= design: air, rotor, or space

Integrated Labs 2610=soph, exp. methods, multidiscipline 3610=junior, fluids/struct. 4610= senior, dynamics, control

AE Options 3 advanced courses chosen from list Individualize program

How Will This Affect Me? Juniors and Seniors (graduating by Summer 2016) –will graduate under original curriculum –minimal or no impact of new curriculum Freshmen –will graduate under new curriculum –being rolled out so graduation can occur within 4 years (by Spring 2018) Sophomores –can graduate under original or new curriculum depending on classes completed, co-op and study abroad plans

Transition Schedule 1350 (Intro.) - no longer offered 2020 and 3450 end this year –3450 in Spring 2015 –2020 in Summer 2015

Transition Schedule Juniors/ Sophomores (working to original curriculum) –by end of this academic year, try to finish 2020/3450 (or don’t start) –by end of next acad. year, should finish 3021, 3310, 3515, 3051/3145, 3125 (and 4310 if Space Design)

Course Sequence Equivalencies For students who can’t finish original curriculum in time (but may not meet prerequisites) OriginalNewNotes /3450, , 3030can take 2020/ ; repeats matl 3515, , or or LCC / /3610students under original curriculum but delayed could take 3051/3145/ /51, 4356/57, 4358/ , 4341/2/3

AE Options Teaching load analysis suggests that we could offer ~7-8 sections per year at current teaching levels and current faculty size Initial list of AE Options: Embedded Systems and Autonomy Introduction to Avionics Integration Design Competition Space Flight Operations Aircraft Configuration Aerodynamics and Advanced Flight Performance Rotorcraft Aeromechanics Applied Computational Fluid Dynamics Advanced Aircraft Propulsion Finite Element Analysis Composites Structural Integrity and Durability Aeroelasticity 6xxx classes also GPA required
