December 9th Purpose: To understand cultural perspectives within an argumentative essay. Activity: We will read page 109 “An Indian Fathers Plea” and analyze the author’s purpose. Movie Permission forms??

December 10th Purpose: To review parts of speech and their purpose in reading and writing. Activity: Today is the first week of Grammar Tuesdays that we will have for the remainder of the semester. The expectation is that you will take notes and complete a corresponding activity (handout) each Tuesday. The handout is due at either the end of class or at the beginning of class the following day. Late grammar handouts will be marked down 10%.

November 22nd Purpose: To edit rough draft Activity:

Entry Task 10/31 Pre-reading assumptions on the back of your Sedaris Halloween reading: Share your thoughts about the notion of arranged marriage and answer the following: 1. What do you think arranged marriage is? 2. What do you think might work in an arranged marriage? 3. What do you think might not work in an arranged marriage? 4. Before reading, do you think it is a good idea or a poor idea? Why or why not?

November 5th TASKS 1. Turn in signed reflection sheet; you can keep your progress report. 2. Take a new Purpose Statement Sheet and graphic organizer Purpose Statements: 1. To define the terms subculture, internal conflict and external conflict. 2. To examine conflict in subcultures.

Deconstruct: To take apart. For the purposes of deconstructing a prompt, it means that the prompt will be taken apart to understand the directions and tasks that a student needs to know.

November 5th Hypothesize: What do the terms subculture, internal and external conflict mean? Write down on your graphic organizer. Subculture: Watch “Mean Girls” clip. Think about the movie and LC subcultures. Talk with neighbor about what you saw in the clip. Complete graphic organizer.

November 5 th - continued Subculture: the cultural values and behavioral patterns distinctive of a particular group in a society. How does this match your hypothesis?

November 6th Purpose: To understand subcultures and internal/external conflict. Entry Task Describe a subculture you are fascinated with. Why are you fascinated with them? What intrigues you?

November 7th Purpose: To examine internal/external conflict in other cultures. Entry task On a piece of paper, put a heading in the right hand corner. Then, think of a law in Washington State or in The United States of America that you think is absolutely ridiculous. Give a brief summary of the law, and then explain why you think it is ridiculous.

November 8th Purpose: To compare/contrast subcultures and examine for internal/external conflict. On the reverse of your internal/external conflict graphic organizer from yesterday, answer the same questions only for the interview with Malala. When done, we will discuss and then talk briefly about Veteran’s Day. Before leaving, you will turn in the graphic organizer for “Mean Girls” in one stack and the other graphic organizer in a separate stack.

November 12th Purpose: To understand conflict from a geographical perspective. Handout: The Glass Castle by Jeanette Wells. We will read and annotate the article looking for conflict and identify if it is internal or external. 8 annotations Highlight unknown vocabulary Highlight areas of conflict – internal or external

November 13th Purpose is continued from yesterday. Read the chapter from The Absolutely True Diary. Make 8 annotations: I think… I feel… I wonder… Where is the conflict – identify and write it on the handout. External or internal?

November 14th Purpose: To examine how to deconstruct a prompt to understand an assignment. Activity: We will read pages and go through the deconstruction process together for numbers 1 and 2. On your own, you will deconstruct numbers 3 and 4. Vocabulary: deconstruct – What do you think it means? Hypothesize and share with a neighbor.

November 15th Purpose: To understand the prompt for the first Embedded Assessment of Unit 2 and to understand the timeline for it. Copy down the following on a separate sheet of paper: November 18-21st – We will meet in the library each of these days. Be sure to have your Springboard Reader. November 22 nd – Peer editing November 25-26: Back to the library for 2 nd draft November 27 th – Final paper due date. Papers turned in after this date are considered late. A 10% deduction after this date (beginning December 1) and then 10% every week thereafter.

November 26th Purpose: To edit rough draft for content – specifically the thesis statement, structure and conclusion. Activity: Edit rough draft for content with your neighbor to your left. When done, we will leave to the library to incorporate edits. You are REQUIRED to staple a Grammarly print out after you have finished your paper. Point deduction for no printout. Pass out rubric for stapling.

December 2nd Purpose: To understand changes in perspective over time. Activity: We will start with a Quick Write that details how you have celebrated Thanksgiving over time. Consider and write about your earliest memory of Thanksgiving and compare that to the Thanksgiving you just celebrated. Has it changed? How so? How might this change when you are an adult? Describe what you think Thanksgiving will look like then. This should be at least one full page of writing. You will keep this until the end of the week (Friday). Next, we will be reading pages and completing the graphic organizer. If you do not complete this in class, it is homework.

December 3rd Purpose: To understand changes in perspective over time. Activity: Finish or review your reading. Complete the graphic organizer. If you do not complete this in class, it is homework.

December 4-5th Purpose: To create a non-print illustration from print text that accurately depicts the meaning. Activity: Read page 99 and create an illustration for each paragraph in the box handout provided. Return of essays and re-write opportunity. Reflection homework.

December 6th Purpose: 1. To explore the meaning of the term “persona” in literature. 2. To share perceptions of literature through illustration and critical thinking. Activity: Discuss persona. Then, get into groups to answer questions about “Worlds Collide”. Questions will be on the overhead; each group needs one recorder who will write answers on one piece of paper. Be sure all group member name are on that sheet of paper.

December 12-13th Purpose: To continue examining cultural perspectives and the effectiveness of an argumentative essay. Activities: We will begin with the collection of the movie permission form. Then, we will correct the pronouns handout from yesterday. Notes from the PowerPoint are due for check off at the end of class. Next, we will begin reading reading “Dave Barry Goes to Japan” on page 116. See overhead for format.

January 6th Welcome back! Discuss: No snowflake ever feels responsible for an avalanche. Purpose To analyze family through a cultural and symbolic lens. Activity Discuss: Worst parts of break with family? Best parts of break with family? Springboard: “Every Day Use” – page 127. Create a Venn Diagram on your Entry Tasks and complete 8 annotations in the reader for the article. Complete SIFT on page 135.

January 7th Purpose To analyze family through a cultural and symbolic lens. (Repeat.) Activity Springboard: “Every Day Use” – page Finish reading the story on your own. 2. Complete 8 annotations (Annotate Eight) in your Springboard. 3. Create a Venn Diagram on blank paper for Maggie and Dee. 4. Complete the SIFT analysis.

January 8th Purpose To create consensus on a synthesis paper topic. Activity Springboard: 1. Complete the SIFT analysis and turn in with your Venn diagram – 10 minutes 2. Then, we will be working in groups to write a synthesis essay as our last Embedded Assessment. If you wish to opt out, please raise your hand. 3. Count off to create groups of 3 – number TBD. 4. February 4th Purpose To understand elements of a sentence. Activities Fragments and run-on sentences – what are they? What do they look like? Using complete sentences, answer another group’s questions from yesterday about the book. Be sure all group member names are on the paper.
