Know Your Student Profile  Includes program of studies (courses taken), rank, GPA, standardized test scores, if required (SAT, ACT, SAT Subject Test[s]), and extracurricular involvement  GPA and rank can be found on current report card and/or transcript (transcript can be accessed through Aspen or printed out by guidance counselor)

Develop a List of Prospective Schools  Working list of 3-10 schools categorized in the following groups: safety (2 schools), target (3 schools), reach (1 school). Please note: number of school(s) in each category should be based on total number of schools on list  List must be realistic and based on solid, current research; applying to schools is expensive (average of $55 per application)

Answer the following questions about your school: 1. Percentage of students who graduate in 6 years? 2. Percentage of students who return sophomore year? 3. Top three majors? 4. What is your intended major? Is it offered? 5. Selectivity percentage? 6. Top 3 factors in admission decision? 7. SAT required? 8. Range for SAT Critical Reading, Math, and Writing? 9. Average GPA? 10. Foreign language required? If so, how many years? 11. Average indebtedness at graduation?

Visit the school’s website for the following:  Search for freshman profile/admission statistics for 2012  Find application. If available, print out a copy of the application. If not available (e.g. school uses Common Application), print out application requirements page  Request information

Determine the correct category on your list for this college (i.e. safety, target, or reach)  Correlate your research with your student profile  Should you include this school on your list?  If so, under which category?
