How to write this paper! Chana’s Sophomore Writing Class Spring Semester

Find the Main Ideas Highlight (or underline) the important parts of each article. Who? What? When? Where? Why? How? Look up words you do not understand –you MUST understand your articles completely in order to do this assignment correctly!

Summarize/Paraphrase/Quote Summarize in your own words what the single main idea of the articles are Paraphrase important supporting points Consider any words, phrases, or brief passages that you believe should be quoted directly

Highlight your Quotes Use a different color highlighter or pen Remember the rules of quoting! A short quotation works well when integrated into a sentence Longer quotations can stand alone Quoting should be done only sparingly; you should have a good reason to include a direct quotation

Don’t forget your verbs Verbs that help you integrate quotations –These are listed on page 110 of the handout you received in class

First Paragraph This should be all your own words Do not quote yet Summarize the main idea

Body Paragraph (s) Contains the details Paraphrase and quote here

Conclusion paragraph Should be short and to the point Do not add your own opinions at any point in the paper

Two types of documentation In-Text Citations Bibliography Your paper should have BOTH However…

There are many Documentation Styles APA Style Manual MLA Style Manual Turabian Style Chicago Manual of Style CBE Style Manual ACS Style Manual Associated Press Style Book and many others!

For this assignment I am more concerned THAT you document your source than HOW you document your source. Take a look at the following slide. How should you give your “in-text citation” and how should you write your “bibliography” entry?

In-text citation According to Kevin Sullivan’s article on WashingtonPost.com, Sullivan claims that….

Indirect Quotation

Bibliography Should be a separate page Title needs to be centered Title should be: Bibliography

Web Page with Known Author and Date Mister Jalopy. “Effulgence of the North: Storefront Arctic Panorama in Los Angeles.” Dinosaurs and Robots. 30 January /01/effulgence-of-north-storefront- arctic.html.

Web Page with Known Date but without Known Author “llinois governor wants to 'fumigate' state's government.” CNN.com. 30 January S/01/30/illinois.governor.quinn/

Indirect Source Sometimes you may have to use an indirect source. An indirect source is a source cited in another source. For such indirect quotations, use "qtd. in" to indicate the source you actually consulted.

In-Text Citation of indirect source For example: Ravitch argues that high schools are pressured to act as "social service centers, and they don't do that well" (qtd. in Weisman 259). Note that, in most cases, a responsible researcher will attempt to find the original source, rather than citing an indirect source.
