Presentation transcript:

United Way Campaign 2014 Captains’ Training Campaign: Oct. 6 - Oct. 17 Osborn HS

Stepha’N Quicksey is a 2013 graduate of Osborn Collegiate Academy of Mathematics, Science, and Technology in Detroit. Currently a sophomore at Grand Valley studying public and nonprofit administration. Interned as a student advisor for the Skillman Foundation's Social Innovation unit, where he helped influence the work of the Foundation from the perspective of a young person. Has held other youth leadership roles with Skillman.

Dreams to Reality: Last December, Stepha’N hatched a plan while in his Grand Valley living center. Instead of leaving school or moving home for the summer, he decided that he would organize a conference for young Detroit leaders. His idea grew to become the Detroit Youth Leadership Conference, held in Detroit in August It joined youth from across Detroit with city leaders from the Mayor’s office, City Council, Police Department, and leading nonprofit organizations. The goal of the day was to put youth perspectives on Detroit issues front-and-center.

GVSU Campaign Mission: To impact the community positively through United Way giving! Goals: To educate the GVSU community about community needs and non- profit agency programs and services To highlight the benefits of United Way giving through affected members in the GVSU community To include all GVSU community members in the campaign To strive to increase participation To recognize those who give

GVSU’s Giving Philosophy Everyone should… Be given an opportunity to respond/give Receive education on the role of United Way and its partner agencies and programs Understand how their dollars make a difference This is done by… Personally giving every individual a pledge form Giving a presentation or finding another way to share information about the impact of United Way Showing GVSU’s impact on United Way through stories and statistics

Why we focus on response rate? Faculty/staff response rate* % % % Faculty/staff giving rate % % % Faculty/staff contribution in dollars 2011$161, $172, $165,459.19

UNITED WAY BELIEVES THAT EVERYONE DESERVES: TO BE FINANCIALLY STABLE A HEALTHY LIFE A GOOD EDUCATION THAT LEADS TO A STABLE CAREER

GIVE. The workplace campaign is the easiest and more powerful way to invest in your community. ADVOCATE. You can make change happen with your voice. Get informed. Tell your friends. VOLUNTEER. United Way’s Volunteer Centers works with volunteers and local nonprofits to develop the best opportunities for people to give their time and talents. LIVE UNITED - What does it mean?

Critical areas in West Michigan that need focused impact to make our community strong

Campaign Tools Every United Way partner has a Toolbox on their website – To access, go to E-Postcards – educational material to send out via Brochures/Handouts – available online Agency Speakers – invite one in to talk at a meeting Incentives – pick from the table of items or request Group Volunteer Project – this can be arranged through the volunteer center Give all employees an opportunity to give to United Way - An anonymous envelope (provided in your packet) helps ensure the confidentiality of their response. Return pledge envelopes/forms to Brian Van Doeselaar (United Way Treasurer, 2015 JHZ) by Friday, October 24, 2014 Send a THANK YOU note/ to everyone who returns a pledge form/envelope.

START WITH WHY “People don't buy what you do; they buy why you do it. And what you do simply proves what you believe. We are drawn to organizations that are good at communicating what they believe.” Simon Sinek, Author

Special Thanks to Bryant Domina and his students from the Region III Transition Program, a program that serves students with mild to moderate mental impairment between years of age! Every year, Bryant brings a group of students to Grand Valley’s Campus to assemble your United Way captains packets. This activity is gratefully appreciated by our Campaign team and equally valued by providing an opportunity for community service. According to Bryant, “one of the highlights of our year has been to assist with the United Way project via GVSU. Our students love the challenge, to be able to spend time on campus, and to truly feel like they are helping someone else out.”
