RFKC Leadership Conference 2010 Becca C. Johnson, Ph.D.

 BA – Music & Spanish  MA – Recreation Administration with an emphasis on Youth Camping  PhD – Educational Psychology  Postdoctoral studies, training & licensure – Clinical Psychology with an emphasis in Abuse Becca C. Johnson, Ph.D.

For me - Love at first sight! Wayne liked– What I’d said about RFKC: “I believe that a week at RFKC can be more effective than a year in therapy/counseling.” *and, that I’d written a book on child abuse for those who work with children (teachers, youth pastors, camp staff, daycare centers) – what they need to know Becca C. Johnson, Ph.D.

 Child Abuse trainer (early 1990s) Now, over 15 years later…  6 different camps in 2 states and 2 countries (helped start 3 camps)  Camp Psychologist – 13  Training Coordinator – 6  Camp Director – 4  Asst. Photographer – 4  Asst Director – 3  Camp photographer – 1  Child Placement Coordinator – 1 (the FIRST year!) Becca C. Johnson, Ph.D.

Process of awareness and appreciation – RFKC grew on them.

 Serve God  Show compassion (mercy, grace, love)  Make a difference  Help the hurting heal (wounded healer)  Self healing  Recognition  Obligation  Fun Becca C. Johnson, Ph.D.

 Often: we are involved for one or more reasons  Reasons fall into two categories  God & Others-focused: What can I GIVE to it - an attitude of giving, caring, helping, serving (1 st four reasons)  Serve God  Show compassion (mercy, grace, love)  Make a difference  Help the hurting heal (wounded healer)  Self-focused: What can I GET out of it - (last four reasons)  Self healing  Recognition  Obligation  Fun Becca C. Johnson, Ph.D.

IF they do not fully understand the mission of RFKC,

 ALL volunteers are appreciated  Long term, committed Volunteers are preferred ◦ People who see the big picture ◦ People dedicated beyond the week at camp ◦ People committed to hanging in there and helping through ‘thick & thin’ ◦ People who understand the ministry & vision of RFKC Becca C. Johnson, Ph.D.

 “I’ve been involved because I see that it can make a difference.”  “I keep coming back because I feel so blessed to be able to tell the kids about God’s great love for them.”  “I want to serve God and this has been a great place to do it.”  “I keep involved because I sense God’s pleasure as I serve with RFKC.”  “I was abused and I’m involved because I want to help abused kids and I know RFKC helps kids heal.”  “I’ve been with RFKC all these years because God called me to this ministry and I’ll be involved until He tells me otherwise.” Becca C. Johnson, Ph.D.

Why are you here?  How can we keep you here? Becca C. Johnson, Ph.D.

Johnson, Ph.D.

 Your Ideas… and/or Discussion Becca C. Johnson, Ph.D.
