DIALYSIS

The Term Dialysis: dia, meaning through, lysis, meaning loosening or splitting

When your kidneys are healthy, they clean your blood When your kidneys are healthy, they clean your blood. They also make hormones that keep your bones strong and your blood healthy.

When your kidneys fail, you need treatment to replace the work your kidneys used to do.

In medicine, dialysis is a process for removing waste and excess water from the blood, and is used to provide an artificial replacement for lost kidney function in people

There are two main types of dialysis: hemodialysis peritoneal dialysis. Both types filter your blood to rid your body of harmful wastes, extra salt and water.

Hemodialysis does that with a machine.

Peritoneal dialysis uses the lining of your abdomen, called the peritoneal membrane, to filter your blood.

Each type has both risks and benefits Each type has both risks and benefits. They also require that you follow a special diet.

Dialysis (Summary)

What is ‘Dialysis’? Dialysis is a process for removing waste and excess water from the blood, and used primarily to provide an artificial replacement for lost kidney function in people with renal failure.

By dialysis, wastes diffuse out of the blood, across a partially permeable membrane, into a fluid that is constantly renewed. In this way urea is removed from the blood without altering any of its features.

How to dialyse:

When is dialysis required? Acute kidney injury Acute renal failure

History of ‘Dialysis’ Dr. Willem Kolff, a Dutch physician, constructed the first working dialyzer in 1943. Due to the scarcity of available resources, Kolff had to improvise and build the initial machine using: sausage casings, beverage cans, a washing machine and various other items that were available at the time.
