L ET ’ S CONSIDER 3 SOCIAL SCIENCE EXPERIMENTS AND THEORIES THAT CAN HELP US UNDERSTAND THESE CASE STUDIES IN GREATER DEPTH …

T HE S TANLEY M ILGRAM E XPERIMENT Obedience and Individual Responsibility

How does someone have power and control over others in a situation? Factors of obedience: Instructor forces the experiment to continue = higher authority/status/education - Entrapment The person thinks that the experimenter is responsible for the outcome = actions are not part of their free will/scapegoating - Authority The experiment is taking place at an academic institution = credible Objectivity The ‘teacher’ is being paid and promised they would complete the experiment = obligation/entrapment Others??? i.e. gradual commitment, fear, money, weapons, situation…

W HAT DECREASED O BEDIENCE ? Reduced Prestige Soften Personality and Reduce Legitimacy of Authority Figure Increase/Decrease Distance

P ERSPECTIVE From the ‘teacher’ - From the ‘learner’ - From the ‘experimenter’ - From society as a whole -

M ORAL J UDGMENT Are people more willing to hurt others in an effort to obey as opposed to be hurt or fear for their own lives? Was this experiment ethical? Explain points that were not ethical? Why? Do the results of the experiment and what it teaches us about human behaviour outweigh the ethical issues it presents? Defend you answer.

Z IMBARDO – B ROKEN W INDOWS Social Order and Disorder Social Values

V IDEOS

Major Principles of why 'broken windows invite vandalism/crime‘ 1: The care and attention we give demonstrates the value we place on things 2: Most people (attempt to) respond to the value they perceive others place on matters & things When did this take place in Zimbardo’s Experiment?

A SHE – C ONFORMITY Group Behaviour Norms Individual’s Choice to Conform

S IGNIFICANCE Designed to test how peer pressure to conform would influence the judgment and individuality of a test subject. The behaviour is the choice of the individual – no one was making the person obey in this case. The results would be altered if the individuals in the experiment was done by writing down the answers instead of saying them out loud.

Conformity: Normative Social Influence (public conformity) Want to “fit in”; don’t want to be deviant Example? Informational Social Influence (private conformity) Ambiguous (unclear) situation, we look to others Example?

F ACTORS I NCREASING C ONFORMITY Size of the Group Difficulty of the Task Status of the Majority of the Group

F ACTORS D ECREASING C ONFORMITY Lack of Group Unanimity/Agreement Answer in Private
